Song Review: ASC2NT – Sweet Devil

ASC2NT - Sweet DevilASC2NT debuted earlier this year with the groovy Love Me Do, displaying an impressive set of vocals and a relatively old-school approach. New single Sweet Devil gives them a bad boy makeover, mixing rock and hip-hop elements into the brew. While this showcases their versatility, the song tends to blend with many similar boy group efforts.

When it comes to this specific song style, Sweet Devil is above average thanks to its vocal firepower. The chorus is a disappointing bit of nothing, but the verses and pre-chorus inject a welcome sense of drama. There are moments the group sound like Beast/Highlight — especially during the power note that ushers in each chorus. Unfortunately, the song’s most interesting instrumental moment occurs during its brief breakdown during the bridge. This segment illustrates what Sweet Devil could have been if given a bit more oomph. If you’re going to throw electric guitar into the mix, you might as well go full bore and make sure the percussion echoes this intensity!

  1. The singing or the vocal production or whatever it is, reminds me of early generations of kpop – it colours outside the lines a little bit, it doesn’ t sound perfectly timed and perfectly processed somehow. Or maybe the vocals sound as if they are in front of the production, instead of nested inside it? I don’ t know anything about producing music so I’ m just trying to put my finger on why it sounds different.

All that aside – I appreciate what this song is going for, and I love the prechorus and guitar moments, but the chorus really is disappointing.

    • I agree, there is something charming and old fashioned about it in a good way. It sounds to me like “I don’t wanna be anything other than what I’ve been trying be lately” era western song but make it kpop – SM in house composer kpop. I Like it with a big eLL.

      • I appreciate what it stands for more than I appreciate hearing it. It’ s also why I have a hard time with some Jpop acts, I noticed they often tend to have this same sort of vocal production style. To me it has the feeling of something being JUST off, the same sort of feeling you get when someone is JUST off pitch.
