Apple (from Song Of The Sirens – 2020)

What I said then: “Given 2020 K-pop’s urge to shift styles every three seconds, Apple is a remarkably consistent track. Its various elements lock together flawlessly, though the entire thing hits at the same energy level. Even as the girls offer a gorgeous vamping post-chorus, the instrumental barely changes intensity. This causes Apple to feel more like a straight line than the series of peaks and valleys it might have been with a more daring arrangement.” (read full review)

Updated thoughts: This almost feels like a precursor to IVE’s discography, though it has a sleeker sexiness. It’s still not one of my favorite of the group’s singles simply because it doesn’t sound much like GFriend to me, but the instrumental is beguiling and the chorus has nice heft and melodic range. With four years behind it, my rating goes up a small notch.

  1. It does has that slender sexiness with a dash of elegance to it, and the post chorus hook (that “wee ooo wow wow wow” one) really tickles my brain in the right way.

    Rating’s the same

  2. I’m obsessed with this song for the simple fact that after Fei (Miss A) released Fantasy in 2016 and left me totally hooked and waiting for something, *anything* that scratched a similar itch in terms of vibe and sonics, this finally came out four years later and truly delivered. Of course Gfriend followed it up with the even more incredible MAGO and thus thoroughly overshadowed Apple, but man, in terms of detours from a core sound, this one was pretty fruitful if you ask me. (hehe)

  3. I didn’t get this song until I began singing along to it in the car. It’s a LOT of fun to sing the chorus. Since then, it’s been one of my favorites. I think the HYBE era gets a lot of hate, but honestly the music was solid the whole way through.
