Song Review: Jin (BTS) – Super Tuna

Jin (BTS) - Super TunaI’m not deep enough into the BTS fandom to know this song existed prior to today, and I’m not even sure it warrants a review given its irreverence. However, new BTS releases are few and far between these days, and this is technically Jin’s first (though not new) song since being discharged from the military.

From what the internet tells me, Super Tuna (슈퍼참치) was first unveiled in 2021 — albeit in shortened form. It’s essentially a gag song about fishing, which you can pretty much discern after one time through the music video. Now extended to two minutes and ten seconds (that counts as a full song these days!), this Super Tuna is ready to be served in all its glory.

While it feels a bit silly to “rate” a song like this, I do appreciate its goofy charm. It sounds like a mix between trot and Eurobeat, which is kind of awesome. It’s nice to see Jin not taking himself too seriously, but I would love a K-pop act to see what they could do with these genres when novelty is no longer a crutch to lean on. I’m ready to order up a Eurobeat revival, hold the tuna.

  1. Our worldwide handsome is back, cooking and fishing again, and here to stay!

I really love how funny and left-field Super Tuna is and I’m so glad that it got an extended studio version.

  2. As a onetime fishing participant and sometimes BTS enjoyer, I am happy this delightful and deeply weird song has an official release with an extended video giving us more lore.

  3. Artists making an official song out of an inside joke will always be one of my favourite things in kpop. The fact that it also has an MV just makes it better. I don’t think I’ll listen to this again necessarily, but I too would be in for a eurobeat revival.

    • I agree most heartily. I appreciate camp and inside jokes in kpop that are recorded for fun. This sort of thing makes up a sizeable part of the back catalog for Super Junior, so this ELF appreciates it when it pops up for other fandoms. And the length is just about perfect – enough to make the point and not belabor it.

      For that, thank you! Jin!

      The score = Priceless!
