K-Pop A-Z Review: GFriend – Bye

K-Pop A-Z - GFriendOne song. Every day. Alphabetical order.

Bye (from Time For The Moon Night – 2018)

We’re back in ballad territory with the gentle Bye. Its orchestral opening sounds ripped straight from a Disney soundtrack about fairies. I don’t mean that in a bad way, though the approach will likely limit the song’s appeal to some listeners. Overall, this is a very pretty track highlighted by a gorgeous vocal blend during the chorus. It’s slavishly old-fashioned, but that’s okay. Sometimes you just want a solid ballad to wave your hands (or phone lights) along to, and Bye earns its bonafides as soon as we reach its expansive bridge and electric guitar solo. The song even features a fade out at the end! How often do we hear that nowadays?

  1. This comment is unreleased to the post, but the other day I gave a listen to Girl’s Day ‘Don’t Forget Me’ and I loved it (thank you for writing about it! That’s how I found it). It may seem bizarre, but the song reminded me of Angel of Love from the Perfect Blue OST. Have you heard the song before? It was one of my entries into J-Pop

  2. Speaking of songs that sound the same, I get this confused with “Starry Sky” all the time. Probably because the lyrics, but I think they’re melodically similar as well.

It’s a great song for when you’re already feeling sad, but yeah by and large it sounds like a singalong at a Disney Parade.

Not their best ballad by far, but if it plays on a rainy day, I’m not gonna skip it. Eunha does “On the verge of tears” like no one else.

Also, Nick: I know you’re doing a review of each of their songs, but another feature that could be cool in the future is a review of each album as a general thing, focusing on how the sounds changes between each one? For example, this is an album where you really hear them lean on Eunha.

  3. It’s a straightforward ballad and definitely old-fashioned, but that’s probably why I like it so much. Their vocals shine and I like the drums and strings arrangement a lot. Especially the killing part at 3:29 (“I don’t wanna cry”) is so beautiful. And that guitar at the end! Easily in the 8s for me.
