Crossroads (from Labyrinth – 2020)

What I said then: “My central issue with Crossroads is that it’s just too lightweight. Yes, there are string sections aplenty swirling around the bulk of the song, but the percussion is too thin and inconsequential to properly anchor the track.” (read full review)

Updated thoughts: Sometimes you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone. While I was pining for the GFriend of 2015-17 back in 2020, I’m pining for Crossroads’ style of symphonic drama today. I still don’t think this is one of their stronger title tracks (especially when b-side Labyrinth was just begging to be promoted), but it’s held up extremely well over the years and carries a wistful charm that feels essential to the group’s appeal. The final few seconds are so grand and exciting. I wish the whole track could have sounded like that.

  1. I was also very low on this song back in 2020. I just wasn’t looking for this mood back then. It’s a hard one to find nowadays

  2. Strongly agree with this one. Back in the day I felt that Crossroads was like a less good version of Sunrise. Nowadays I’d kill for anything in this genre 😦

  3. This is definitely the weakest of the Sunrise-Monnight-Crossroads trio, but that final chorus where her voice is isolated before the instrumentals come in all at once is incredible.

  4. Crossroads was the song that got me interested in Gfriend. I probably enjoyed it more than others in the first listen because I didn’t really expect a specific sound from them. I have always loved ballads and emotional songs and I believe that Crossroads is one of Gfriend’s most heartbreaking songs. I love how dramatic it feels and how it escalates as the song proceeds. One of my favorites ever and the MV is just a masterpiece.
