K-Pop A-Z Review: GFriend – Eclipse

Eclipse (from Labyrinth – 2020)

Eclipse feels like a blend of the earthy tones of this album’s title track (Crossroads) and the swinging energy of GFriend’s debut era. I love the violin that winds its way through the instrumental, giving over to more modern sounding synths. The chorus has a beautiful lilt that weaves in unexpected directions as the production kicks up with symphonic heft. This one’s a real sleeper hit for me. And hearing it with 2024 ears, parts of the hook actually remind me of TWS’s If I’m S, Can You Be My N. Totally different moods of course, but the musical kinship is there!

  1. Oof, this is another one I just don’t care for. Idk why. Perfectly fine song, I just don’t like it (although the second part of the chorus sounds a lot like the chorus of their Ave Maria, no?)

  2. For whatever reason, this is the only song on that album that I haven’t favorited. Giving it another listen, I really like the intro, but all in all, it doesn’t fully convince me. Hard to say why…
