Song Review: tripleS Visionary Vision – Hit The Floor

tripleS Visionary Vision - Hit the FloortripleS “Visionary Vision” has to be one of the more ridiculous sub-unit names to emerge lately, fully embracing an adjective-noun repetition like an extraordinary extraordinaire. But hey, this is K-pop! Fun with language is just an added bonus. Group name aside, Visionary Vision marks the debut of tripleS’s first dance-based sub-unit. Hit The Floor delivers an old-school hip-hop sound with emphasis on groove and attitude.

Whenever K-pop seeks to head back to 90’s hip-hop influences, chances are we’ll hear the rubbery bass popularized by H.O.T’s 1996 hit Warrior’s Descendent. Sure enough, Hit The Floor opens with this familiar arrangement. The production goes on to add more synth, often blaring like sirens in the background. The song has many of the right ingredients but there’s a messiness to their deployment that makes the instrumental feel overly busy and not particularly funky. Sometimes simplicity works better on a track like this.

Similarly, Hit The Floor‘s hooks are all over the place. I’m not fond of the chant at its center and the peeks of melody we get during the pre-choruses are largely unmemorable. The rapped verses are fun, but fail to land any major punches. If you’re looking for an addictive 90’s hip-hop throwback from an idol group, you’re better off going back to Young Posse’s more focused and playful Ate That.

  1. i can’t disagree with the rating yet i immediately put it on my main playlist. i do enjoy tripleS a lot, but this is kind of a guilty pleasure to put it on there? yeah it’s messy, yeah i think it’s far from their best title track, and i’m not about to scream that it’s the best song ever, but like, there’s something that’s drawing me to it

i do agree that if someone seeks a similar thing they should just go with Ate That

  2. Alright, so I listened to the whole album front to back.

Regarding the title track itself, I definitely think it is messy but also had parts that pleasantly surprised me (prechorus, bridge, dance break), and overall I can say that this song carries ambition in a time where I feel it’s hard to really be drawn to things because it’s polished and shaven to the bone for streams. Modhaus is not perfect but at least in some facets, they do try and they have produced some personal gems. In regards to the argument for Ate That, I guess it’s a much better produced song, I also think in hindsight that some creative decisions (re: the concept) were that egregious that I would pass even if the quality was better*. I’d put Hit The Floor at 7.5 (7,8,7,8).

As for the album itself, I think this really was the album where they got in a lot of interesting production choices that gave these songs more teeth than what was previewed. I will still say their mixing/mastering is not perfect, but I think the big takeaway is that at least the tracks on here, for the most part are interesting. The weird thing is my 2 complaints are 1) there are tracks that could have had more time (Hit The Floor, Eclair, Love Soseol, Bionic Power) and 2) there were songs that could have been cut (Atmosphere, Vision). They need to take their strongest ideas, which they here they have several, and really push the quality on those rather than put as many tracks as they could on here. I think that TripleS’s discography shows an ambition that not a lot of groups/companies have these days. They are definitely not perfect but the draw is they have a sound and format makes them TripleS (although I wish they never did the whole NFT thing, absolutely useless feature).

Personal gems are Choom (8,8,8,8) Eclair (8,9,8,8), and Love Soseol (8,9,8,9). Love Seosol especially has a feeling similar to some of Red Velvet’s tracks with a hint of artists like Porter Robinson in his Nurture days. These are the ones I’d argue are worth checking out for a Buried Treasure. Overall, this is an album that pleasantly surprised me given that my bar was not too high from the highlight medley, it gets a decent to strong 7 from me.

*NOTE : Not saying the above as in I don’t like Young Posse, but we need to discuss the ongoing pattern of appropriation that songs and concepts such as both Ate That AND Hit The Floor (to an extent) carry.

  3. Was super bothering me where I had heard that bass loop before, did end up sleuthing it out haha! Seotaiji and the boys, very 90s of them indeed. Not exactly my cup of tea but looking forward to streaming the album now that my curiosity has been satisfied now lol
