Fever (from Fever Season – 2019)
What I said then: “There are moments when the song wants to take off (especially the breathless, synth-dripped pre-chorus), but like so many tracks of this style, Fever constantly has to work its way back to its non-starter hook/drop combo.” (read full review)
Updated thoughts: I was eager to revisit this one because it’s not a GFriend song (or album) I listen to often and I remember disliking it when it came out. But as with the tropical trend overall, this sounds much better to my 2024 ears. I miss these particular synth textures and even though Fever climaxes in an overused instrumental drop, it’s a satisfying summer sound that crests with positive energy. I actually like this quite a bit now, though it’s not a style I associate with GFriend at all.

Quite surprised you had such a more favourable reception to it this time round, though it would still be on the lower end in terms of their title tracks

I wish the whole song was as euphoric as Yuju’s prechorus

Easily their worst title track by a lot. I actively avoid this one.
