K-Pop A-Z Review: GFriend – Flower Garden

Flower Garden (from Time For The Moon Night – 2018)

What I said then: “MIO also produced last year’s excellent Please Save My Earth, and borrows the same wind-tunnel layering effect for Garden‘s pre-chorus. It’s hard to explain this specific audio trick and why I love it so much. There’s this incredibly grandiose swell of orchestration, but rather than take center stage it’s pushed just below the surface to lend a sense of otherworldly atmosphere.” (read full review)

Updated thoughts: Yeah, this is a favorite b-side for sure. It’s all about that aforementioned orchestral swell and the sense of anticipation it builds. The melody is almost secondary, though the song scores on that front too. Yuju’s really belting on this one, which is always a win and fits this style of production especially well. There’s no girl group these days embracing pure bombast like this. The song is almost operatic in its sound and ambition.

  1. This, in fact, is my first favorite in this EP TFTMN as well, but as time passed, I’m more forwarded to “Love Bug” for it’s bubbly, cutesy and fun melody and song play.

  2. One of my favorite Friend songs of all time. It made me wish I could figure skate and craft a routine to all of its flourishes. If only we’d gotten even one performance of it 🥲

  3. Definitely one of my favorite b-sides. The short pauses make the following impact even more powerful. And the guitar solo at 2/3rds of the song is just incredible!
