K-Pop A-Z Review: GFriend – Labyrinth

K-Pop A-Z - GFriendOne song. Every day. Alphabetical order.

Keep up with GFriend’s A-Z reviews here!

Labyrinth (from Labyrinth – 2020)

Previous Thoughts: “The track draws strong influence from J-pop, but not the kind of ornate, wistful fare that inspired GFriend’s new single Crossroads. Instead, Labyrinth hearkens back to the high-energy techno of the late 90’s – one of my favorite J-pop eras ever.” (full review)

Updated thoughts: Fingertip’s synth warrior energy was finally revisited three years later with this dynamite album track. No GFriend b-side deserved to be a title track more than Labyrinth. It has incredible potency, heightened by electric guitar and a killer post-chorus synth riff. If there’s a weak point, it’s the verses. They could do with an extra kick here and there – particularly during the second verse. However, the chorus is airtight and incredibly dramatic and a standout bridge builds toward a knockout climax. This isn’t quite approaching “legendary” status for me, but it’s damn close.

  1. Yeah this song is a dynamo.

Same thing as my comment on La Pam Pam, they actually give Sowon something to do here. In their defense, they got a lot better at it towards the end; Apple is almost exactly an even split.

This is also one of the first songs where they give Umji challenging parts, either. She steadily got more lines, but actually getting a high note was unprecedented.

The bridge here (2:35) is eeeeeexcellent.

This probably should have been the title instead of Crossroads, tbh, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they got burned by Fingertip and decided to play it safe.

  2. What if… What if this song is a next comeback after Fingertip… Would it change them in alternate universe. Fingertip + This could definitely step Gfriend back into the 90’s trend just back in 2018/19.
