After years of being relatively quiet compared to other NCT units, WayV had a busy 2024. They’ve already released albums in Korea and Japan and now they’re back to close out the year with a new project. High Five is the upcoming album’s pre-release and continues the funky, upbeat sound of June’s Give Me That.
The guys blitz through the opening verse, rapping and singing over boisterous breakbeats and blasts of brass. The song takes a dip during the pre-chorus as much of the instrumental filters out for a more downbeat arrangement. However, it isn’t long before the rhythm rekindles. High Five‘s chorus offers a spike of energy, following its chanted hook with more melodic moments. In theory, this all works quite well. There’s enough diversity within the structure to keep things engaging and brisk. So, why isn’t High Five hitting me the way I’d hope?
I know I’m a broken record on this, but yet again I think it all comes down to melody. The melodies here aren’t bad, but they’re also not particularly creative. Much of the song is rapped or shouted with melody acting as an afterthought rather than a starring role. Individual segments feel designed for function over pleasure, making High Five sturdy but unremarkable when stacked against the group’s many triumphs. I like them in this bright, funky atmosphere, but I’d love to see this vibe married to a structure as compelling as last year’s On My Youth.

I have listened to the song 4 times this morning, just in the past couple hours, and can’t remember a single thing about it.

What is it lately with songs having promising verses and a disappointing chorus?

Wow, I felt the opposite. I wasn’t sure about it with the verses, felt good about the prechorus, once again felt uneasy with the chanting but was ultimately satisified when the “One and only, drive you crazy” kicked in. 8 for me as well

This reminds me so much of Passion Fruit by The Boyz. It’s not as good, though I’m always happy to hear from WayV. I’m still not over Poppin’ Love, always thought it could’ve had a Buried Treasure feature.

Oooh, I also loved Poppin’ Love. It’s great to see that other people like it as much as I do. Even though it’s not really my style, there’s just something about that song!
