Song Review: G-Dragon – Home Sweet Home (ft. Taeyang & Daesung)

G-Dragon - Home Sweet HomeI was a bit overzealous when writing about G-Dragon’s Power because I was simply so excited to have him back in music after seven long years. That zealousness continues with a review for Home Sweet Home, even if the song has no accompanying music video, and grows even more intense with fellow Bigbang members Taeyang and Daesung on the track, giving us a first peak at how the group might function as a trio. That zealousness absolutely explodes when Home turns out to be one of those great G-Dragon rockers he pulls off so well.

Okay, enough zealousness for now. Even on first listen, it’s clear Home Sweet Home is no Crooked. I don’t even think it’s a Sober. However, I’ll gladly devour any Crooked-flavored crumb no matter how small, and there are hints of its taste lingering all over this song. From its slurred verses to the big EDM-meets-rock riff that anchors the chorus, nostalgia courses hard through Home Sweet Home. And at three and a half minutes, it’s given chance to fully realize its ideas.

While Taeyang and Daesung feature on the track, their role is relegated to the pre-choruses. This is still very much a G-Dragon solo effort. His impish tone has altered with age and the song’s (overused) vocal effects, but he remains a compelling storyteller with an instantly recognizable style. Without his voice steering this ship, Home Sweet Home would likely feel too generic for its own good. I’m going to temper my zealousness a bit this time, but I already prefer this to Power and hope the guys will release a video after their MAMA performance.

  1. I overrated G-Dragon’s single ‘Power’, the repetition of that single over time becomes tiresome. So, I’m not going to make the same mistake here, although I think this deserves be a ‘Buried Treasure’

    8.5 for now

  2. I’m not loving this one to be honest, it sounds pretty dated. Maybe the video or the performance wil elevate it a little for me. Power is a banger though, so my interest in his album (I think he’s dropping one?) is still alive.

  3. It so nice that the trio will be doing MAMA! A real Comeback! And of course you need a couple new songs for it! I think when they perform it live, both songs will just POP.

The recording is aight. GD has such a characteristic voice that everyone was trying to mimic for a long while, so I don’t know why he covers it up with a heavy thumb on the processing button.

  4. I left a similar comment on Power, but wtf is he doing with his voice??? He sounds cartoonishly goofy during the majority of this song. I can’t even take the song seriously because the vocals are so jarring on top of the instrumental. Once again, it is so disappointing to hear a song that could potentially be listenable, but is instead unlistenable due to the cringe-inducing and questionable vocals. The random vocal noises ad-libbed during the verses also don’t help.

The worst sounding vocal moment to me is the line he “sings” right before the chorus hits. Before the second chorus, one of the other guys (I don’t know Big Bang much) delivers a pleasant couple of lines, and is immediately followed by G-dragon’s infuriatingly whiny pre chorus line. The contrast between their vocals really makes you wish the whole song was sung by the other two guys only.

    Here’s my rating:

    G-dragon: D-

    Everything else: serviceable!

  5. yeah, it’s fun to hear gd again (although he was never my favorite voice in big bang) but, like power, this is a disappointment. music and lyrics. not sure if it’s the composition or just the mix, but it is missing something on this one to me. Feels like it’s trying very hard to be anthemic but never get quite there, doesn’t have the punch for it.

  6. I see a lot of disappointed people in the comments. I tend to be critical as well, but I can’t say I understand it this time. This sounds reminiscent of old BigBang, so maybe it’s nostalgia for me, or maybe it’s the feeling of being so incredibly lucky to witness them coming back – but I love it.

As someone who’s first ever bias was T.O.P, GD’s “You’re welcome back home, wherever you are” during the bridge hit me hard.

  7. My bias is strong with this one I’ll admit, but I love it. I’ve been loving the shift in sound this year back to the older K-pop style and this really sold it for me. Seeing them perform it live at MAMA solidified it for me. People can call it dated, but honestly I am so happy the music still sounds like GD and BIGBANG. This is what I needed from them coming back and you could see everyone in that MAMA audience lose it for a reason. Will it hold up like other iconic BIGBANG or GD songs? Maybe not, but as I thought our chances of ever having them back were closing in on 0, this comeback was everything I needed as a VIP after waiting for 7 years.

  8. The ‘Home Sweet Home’ stage performed by BIGBANG at the 2024 MAMA was more than just a performance—it was a deeply emotional moment of reunion with their fans. Breaking their long hiatus and returning as a complete group, BIGBANG once again demonstrated their powerful presence and reminded everyone why they are true icons of K-POP.

    1. Harmony of Stage Design and Music
As the title suggests, ‘Home Sweet Home’ conveys a warm and sentimental message, but on stage, it was reborn with BIGBANG’s unique and powerful energy. The stage design was equally impressive. Warm lighting and a minimalist yet sophisticated backdrop amplified the song’s emotional resonance. In particular, the massive house-shaped structure at the center of the stage symbolized the theme of “home,” delivering both comfort and familiarity to fans.

    2. A Stage Highlighted by the Members’ Synergy
Each member—G-Dragon, Taeyang, and Daesung—brought their unique talents and performances together in perfect harmony, elevating the quality of the song. G-Dragon’s unrivaled stage presence captivated the audience, while Taeyang’s smooth yet powerful vocals heightened the song’s emotion. Daesung’s warm tone and delicate expression added depth to the piece. The members exchanging smiles and glances during the performance was a heartfelt moment that deeply moved the fans.

    3. Connection with the Fans
Throughout the performance, gestures like waving at fans and sincere gazes toward the audience showed the deep bond BIGBANG shares with their supporters. A standout moment was G-Dragon saying, “Our home is wherever you VIPs are.” This statement resonated profoundly, filling the venue with thunderous cheers. It was more than just a remark—it was a message of gratitude to the fans who had remained steadfast in their love, despite the long wait.

    4. Beyond a Comeback
This stage was not merely a comeback; it was a testament to BIGBANG’s ability to transcend generations and connect with fans through their music. Rather than following trends, BIGBANG stayed true to their unique style, proving that they remain one of the most beloved groups. Even fellow artists were seen enjoying and singing along to their performance, underscoring BIGBANG’s unparalleled influence within K-POP.

    5. A Memorable Ending
The performance ended with the members gathering at the center of the stage to bow and express their gratitude to the fans, leaving a lasting impression. As the lights dimmed and the cheers filled the air, it was clear that this performance would become a cherished memory for the fans forever.

In conclusion, BIGBANG’s ‘Home Sweet Home’ stage was more than just an outstanding performance—it was a special moment of connection and shared memories with their fans. Their timeless charm and undeniable stage presence reaffirm that the title of “legend” suits them perfectly.
