Rosé’s first full album is just around the corner, and it’s already buoyed by a global megahit in the form of APT. with Bruno Mars. That single’s addictive sound has proven to appeal to a vast array of tastes. You know a song has broken through with the general public when they start using it in Dancing With The Stars advertisements! With new single Number One Girl, she’s returning to the successful Bruno Mars well. He may not be a duet partner this time, but he co-wrote and co-produced the song.
It APT. was all raucous firepower, Number One Girl dials things way back for a softer sound reminiscent of her solo debut. Based on what we’ve known of her music thus far, this is the style I’d expected from her album. It’s also the style I dreaded, as these kind of stark piano ballads tend to be a bit indulgent for me. Rosé has a very distinct voice, yet it’s also one that fits distinctly in the pop girl gestalt of the moment. Her performance feels genuine, but there are so many other songs and performances of this nature in the global marketplace, making it difficult for something like Number One Girl to stand out.
The melodies here are nice and you can hear Mars’ touch all over them. The production mostly stays out of the way, serving dramatic percussion over unadorned keys. This shines full spotlight on Rosé and she mostly captivates. I imagine this appealing very strongly to her core fanbase, but as a more casual listener it went in one ear and out the other. I’d take the frenzied energy of APT. any day, and I actually think she pulls off that concept more convincingly.

It’s a mellow ballad backed by a strong vocal performance. Not much thoughts given ballads are almost never my cup of tea
Rating’s the same.

could this be her driver’s license? seen a lot of her fans saying this could be it.

i think driver’s license is a superior song but rosé has the backing to see a comparable amount of success

So far I’m not convinced by their collaborative single ‘APT.’, that repetition really irritates me. And, well, this pre-release single doesn’t do much for me either.
I actually heard the preview of some tracks from Rosé’s album and, wow… every track seems to emulate Taylor Swift’s dramatic sound. It’s funny now the coincidence that Rosé wants to be blonde when she isn’t

“APT.” was definitely a good start and a great way to support the album. This single, I’m not so crazy about, but it’s still a well-made song with some serious vocals!
I don’t think she will be adopting this style throught the whole album, though. She already teased 6 tracks and only this one was a piano ballad, so hopefully the 12 tracks will have a variety of sounds.
What I think it’s sure is that she is not taking that “pop girl” sound, that style is most likely something Lisa would work with in her album.
Not re-playing this one that often, but I’m sure I will like the album, based on the snippets and “APT”

Every solo female has a song like this out at right about now in their solo career. For what it is, it is above average fare. It is a nice opportunity for Rose’ to show off her vocals.

I’m impressed with her vocals, but the song is kind of dull..makes GONE seem like a banger.

very dull, but I can see it being a grower.
7.5 (8, 7, 8, 7) for me

I was hoping she’d be the next Stevie Nicks; she has that kind of unique timbre to cast enchantments. Sadly it’s being wasted, though.

Yeah, she really has potential for that, but it’s sadly wasted on Starbucks background music.

Ahh yes, here it is. That’s exactly what I expected from her solo, so I was shocked when Apt. came out and was so good. I had hopes the album will go down that lane, but here we are. This new song is just a giant uninspired bore. I hope the album will be more like Apt, but it looks like it’s gonna be more of this “deep” and “personal” bs. Yawn

it’s well written and well performed. Nothing stands out too much but I could see myself listening to it occasionally
I have stronger thoughts on the video. Why did they go this route? You would think for a radio friendly ballad they’d opt for a more mainstream video aesthetic. But no, vhs filter and multiple rosés for some reason. It’s something I associate with indie, more upbeat, or just plain weirder songs. On it’s own there’s nothing wrong, but it fails in enhancing the experience of listening to the song
