Song Review: MYTRO – Bomb Bomb Bomb

MYTRO - Bomb Bomb BombSM Entertainment’s new trot boy group has not followed the traditional rollout for a rookie, and that’s to be expected given their niche genre. Rather than perform on music shows, they’ve been hanging out on their very own reality series Falling for a Trot-dol: Lovestruck Sisters. Officially, they haven’t made their full debut yet, but Bomb Bomb Bomb (밤밤밤) offers our first taste of their sound.

Trot can be an acquired taste — especially if you didn’t grow up immersed in the culture. I’ll be interested to see how SM pitches MYTRO. Will they be a purely Korean promotion or will they attempt to push more traditional sounds internationally? Bomb Bomb Bomb seems to split the difference, offering trot melodies and performance over more modern production. The percussion isn’t miles away from reggaeton, though it’s used in a completely different way.

One thing I appreciate about trot is that its singers are always belting. There’s no subdued approach here. Vocals are allowed to shine, and Bomb Bomb Bomb certainly takes this approach. I can’t say I’m often in the mood for the stylization that goes along with the genre, but I can always appreciate a solid vocal performance. The song even finds space for a brief rap verse leading into the chorus. MYTRO are attempting many things at once, and that’s kind of exciting. I hope they find an audience that appreciates them.

  1. Glad to see my man Shohei in business. Welp, for the song, it gives off huge Latin vibes, and I like the vocal performance here. Also a fine rap verse leading to the chorus and a nice key change in the end adds more flavour to it. I don’t know much about trot tbvh, but I’m rooting for them from the sides.

    8 for me as well.

  2. Now this is interesting – a kpop group that draws on local traditional music rather than taking influences from western pop!

I always appreciate traditional influences in pop songs and this too feels sort of nostalgic and folksy because, even though I have no connections to korean culture whatsoever, the singing style and melodies have similarities to folksy pop songs in my own country.

Besides that powerful combination of novelty and nostalgia, this song is actually catchy too. I’m rooting for them!

  4. as a long time kpop stan woman pushing 30 I love these guys. Nice to see some good looking grown men doing some good song and dance without it being cringe or reaching for a young demographic.
