K-Pop A-Z Review: GFriend – Rainbow

K-Pop A-Z - GFriendOne song. Every day. Alphabetical order.

Rainbow (from Rainbow – 2017)

Previous Thoughts: “Rainbow is built around the sort of hook that is hard to find in 2017 K-pop — a snowballing refrain that incorporates multiple melody lines into a cohesive, sustained chorus. I especially love the raised note right before this segment, propelling us into the rousing key change.” (full review)

Updated thoughts: Imagine me thinking a “snowballing refrain” was hard to find in 2017! My 2024 self pities that sweet child of the past. Robust melodies are even harder to find today, and a song like Rainbow feels like a total breath of fresh air. It has the propulsive anime-esque energy the group is often known for, but the chorus is definitely stronger than the verses. This feels like a solid – but unspectacular – entry in their catalog. It’s certainly worth a recommendation, even if it falls short of their greatest work.

    • I was so excited for that!

Listening to it, though, it sounds like Yuju’s getting the most digital help there.

I think this next album is going to have maybe one Yuju power note but the rest is going to be Eunha and Yerin (surprising to some) doing the heavy lifting– Eunha’s been doing it for years, and Yerin’s the closest to Yuju in timbre.

      • oh right, yesterday i was also surprised to watch how Yuju’s singing voice became even less full and weakened even more everytime it was her turn, despite people saying she has been recovering her technique post-Hybe.

Almost thought it was just me.

      • Yeah, I’ve been kinda sad seeing Yuju’s voice decline from her peak and the Killing Voice kinda just reaffirmed that for me again…

  1. This one is fine. It’s kind of repetitive. Not the best song on that album, but not bad. The bridge is pretty good into the final chorus and descant.

  2. One of my favorite and most listened Gfriend songs! The “nothing is impossible/everything is possible” might be slightly cheesy, but the beautiful piano intro that transitions into a strong guitar solo is just awesome. And the chorus is really nice too. Colors colors colors..

Is it slightly repetitive? Yes, but I don’t mind. 9+ for me.
