K-Pop A-Z Review: GFriend – Red Umbrella

Red Umbrella (from Parallel / Rainbow – 2017)

This is such a burst of summer energy. It’s the closest GFriend’s music ever got to bossa nova, yet it also pulls in a hearty dose of disco. The track is on the lighter side of their discography, though that’s by design. Its splashy arrangement (that brass!) and airy vocal performance join forces to forge a sound akin to a fresh summer breeze. As usual, Yuju’s powerful tone keeps the song from floating away entirely. This doesn’t feel like a definitive GFriend hit, but it’s such a welcome addition to their catalog.

  1. I think I would say this is like a post-2000’s-ish type of K-Pop Brighter music sounds like. The brass arrangement in pre-chorus and the synth in chorus, especially the melody on the second part of chorus (glad they bring a full length of chorus structure here) just bring me back to those 2002~2004 music style.

  2. Parallel/Rainbow might be my favorite Gfriend album, and this song is another factor. I just love how sprinkly/splashy it is.

I think it has a bit of a J-pop vibe?
