K-Pop A-Z Review: GFriend – Wanna Be

Wanna Be (from What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim OST – 2018)

I’m surprised that GFriend didn’t record more OST songs, especially early in their career. Their light, melodic sound matches dramas well – especially romantic comedies. Wanna Be is pretty effortless in its construction and execution, offering a bright, easy sound that isn’t super compelling but works well as background music. The bounding melody recalls K-pop’s second generation despite this being released in the late 2010s. My favorite moment occurs during the bridge, when the track briefly gathers steam on its way to a big Yuju power note.

  1. Oh hey! MAGO isn’t the only Gfriend song I know!! I just didn’t realize that this was them on the What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim soundtrack. Cute song, I always enjoyed it when it popped up as I was watching the drama.

  2. Never heard this one, actually. Or maybe I have?

It’s definitely an OST; there’s no way this would make it onto an album. Pleasant enough, but also something you’d see as the soundtrack of a factory’s workplace safety training video.
