K-Pop A-Z Review: GFriend – Always

K-Pop A-Z - GFriendOne song. Every day. Alphabetical order.

Keep up with GFriend’s A-Z reviews here!

Always (from Season Of Memories – 2025)

Just one day after concluding, the GFriend A-Z feature briefly stirs to life once more because the group has made its reunion today and released a new b-side. And… surprise, surprise… Always is not a dull ballad! In fact, it’s much stronger than its accompanying title track. Always isn’t quite the classic GFriend sound I crave, but its robust pop/rock instrumental is full and exciting in a way that has always suited the girls.

Always blends straightforward pop hooks with an extremely effective strings riff that closes each chorus. Its blend of stadium-ready chords and orchestral flourishes works as a great reinterpretation of GFriend’s musical legacy. Add some bright, retro synths and you’ve got a heady brew that feels like a real celebration. The song features actual dynamics, moving through distinct segments without rushing. This allows each moment to revel in its potential. All that’s missing are some well-placed power notes and a finale that truly kicks the track into the stratosphere.

  1. Interesting post-chorus instrumentals.

Unfortunately it sounds like it belongs on the credits of the Lego Movie or something.

It was also over before I was ready for it– no power note, and no bridge??? Unless you count Sowon’s spoken line.

Yuju’s double-tracking there is nice– her low voice is great.

I’d say this is closer to a Yerin solo track than a GFRIEND song.

We’ll see how this grows on me, just like Season of Memories. It’s not my favorite, but hey, at least we didn’t get Fever pt 2!

  2. The synths!

Yup, I’m also glad this second song isn’t a ballad. Would I have wished for a bigger album with more tracks including a ballad? Absolutely. But since it’s only two songs, I prefer something bright.

And this b-side delivered! Always is just fun and enjoyable, and it’ll fit right into their extensive discography. Season of Memories also grew on me since its release, but my original review (https://thebiaslist.com/2025/01/13/song-review-gfriend-season-of-memories/#comment-153516) still applies. All in all I’m just glad that they’re back and I really hope it wasn’t a one time thing and that we don’t have to wait another few years.

    • I hope we don’t have to wait years either. I’m a little concerned that they only did a single and not even an EP. Did they feel uncertain about the reunion’s success?

      • I would have felt uncertain if I were them, especially since it’s through Source. They would have gone into it knowing they weren’t a priority and that HYBE was in the middle of a sh*tstorm. It also feels like they might have had tighter budget constraints as well. They could be just testing the waters to see what the working relationship was like with them now before signing on to something longer as well. I hope they stay together though, even if it’s just a yearly release or something and they do their own things independently or as ViViZi the rest of the time.

  3. This is one of those times when I prefer a b side over the title track but understand why it wasn’t chosen to be promoted. “Always” deserves to be performed for sure, but I feel like “season of memories” was made to hook listeners in more quickly

  4. Maybe it’s just me, but somehow I feel like they purposefully restrained Yuju’s voice on this reunion? I don’t know if it was a deliberate production choice or something she requested, but given how signature a Yuju power note was in GFriend’s discography, especially their singles, it’s frankly kind of weird that one is entirely absent when they must have expected fans would have killed it. And considering how much nostalgia is used throughout the release, it’s just…. strange.
