Song Review: GOT7 – Python

GOT7 has been a good model for how you keep an idol group going even after its members have moved on to solo endeavors. All seven left JYP Entertainment in 2021 but have managed to come back together several times with new music. We haven’t heard from them since 2022, making the release of Python highly anticipated by fans.

I was a huge GOT7 fan early on, but as the guys began to take more control of their music it became clear that our tastes don’t really align. That’s fine. Not every group needs to be catered toward my musical preferences! However, it makes a track like Python a tricky proposition. While I enjoy seeing the guys back at it with new music, the song’s languid pace and trap beats feel like a style better left in 2019. Thankfully, this mix is buoyed by some standout synth, giving parts of the song a heartier appeal. If more of Python had taken this approach, you’d be reading a very different review.

Unfortunately, there’s too much murk to wade through before reaching Python‘s limited highlights. I’m not a fan of the English lyrics at all — especially during the second verse. They just don’t feel authentic, choosing instead to replicate tropes you’d hear in the West. And without much happening in the instrumental, there’s nothing to distract from Python‘s less-engaging choices. At just over two and a half minutes, the song simply spins its wheels until it’s finished, slithering its way out without ever recalling the glories of the group’s past.

  1. I don’t want to sound offensive, but this song sounds like any singer whose initial name is “Lil”, and the fact that the music is 90% in English doesn’t help. Got7 lost a lot of appeal in the years after 2015. I no longer see their music the way it used to be for me even their musical image has changed

When I heard the preview of Python I already knew that the music wouldn’t be for me, even though this was a pre-conceived thought. This trap genre is not my cup of tea. I’ll take a look at the album to see if I can find something better

    • Wow! Why does it feel like this comment was penned on a crisp JYP Entertainment letter head? I do feel bad for CEO JYPark, his bank account must be in red these days because I see he has himself and even poor Rain pimping out in the streets of Gangnam just like in the old days. (Disclaimer: I did not post this comment to be taken out of context against “Mr. Rainism” in any form or fashion.)

(P.S. As for the album, “Winter Heptagon”, Bravo!! Best concept, production, lyrics, etc. from GOT7 in years. I for one am glad that they took their time and gained more experience as solo artists and were able to come back together collectively as 7 men with 7 different opinions and make one fire ass album that will inevitably be named as one of 2025’s K-POP Albums of the year!)

      ….MIC DROP….

      • I admire the ironic conviction with which he defends his perspective, as if appreciation for Got7’s current production were a universal requirement or their artistic trajectory should be venerated without question. It’s interesting that my opinion is automatically associated with J.Y. Park simply because he didn’t share the same enthusiasm, as if the simple fact of appreciating a certain work conferred superiority. Feel free to continue this internal struggle, as my vision remains unchanged. In the end, does my opinion really matter to you, or does your concern arise precisely from the fear that it is well-founded?

  2. as someone who IS a fan of the genre. i liked it as expected, still yeah i wished for more of those synths maybe we could have had that only if the song wasn’t just over 2 minutes. Other than that i believe out the door from the album might be more suited to your tastes?

  3. So, after departing from JYP because they wanted to be free to express their actual attitudes and talents, all they’ve been able to craft is a series of anonimous and annoying tracks with no glimpse of attitude and talent.

Given the evidences, I guess they’ve definitely overestimated themselves.

    • This is the usual result of artists wanting to be free to pursue their own ideas. Meh. There are the rare ones where they change agencies or go solo and it does vastly open up new sounds and ideas. But most of the time it just becomes meh.

  4. I actually like GOT7’s later output about as much as their early stuff, but this isn’t really what I was looking for from them, so I’m a bit bummed. Lyrically this was not it. The butchered English of the early gens is so much better than this comprehensible but cringeworthy usage.

  5. I was a casual GOT7 listener (got into K-pop in 2015) but never a big fan. Funny enough, I started liking more and more of their stuff after they left JYP Entertainment. I feel like this style they’re going for resonates with me and I enjoyed this song and a couple more on their album.

My only criticism is that they didn’t really play much with the sounds on the pre-chorus, I feel like the song would’ve been great with some more of that in the last section. I also feel like it needed a bridge, with some of the vocalists doing a couple harmonies and adlibs.

    I liked this, 8/10.

  6. As someone that likes trap, BamBam’s music (he was lead production on Python) and started becoming a fan with their flight log albums, this is pretty good. Though this song definitely needed to be a whole minute longer, pretty disappointed they went with the two minute title track route after all these years of waiting. For what is there I do like, especially the pre chorus. If they had a climatic bridge with that sick synth and a nice ending breakdown with some strong adlibs it could’ve went into 10 out of 10 territory, but alas that didn’t happen so I’d give about an 8. Still glad to see them back and hopefully the rest of the album is good.

  7. I’m glad they’re back and that they actually do the work to stay together despite their solo ventures. This song felt like different songs stitched together and I actually liked one part of it… the more electronic part. the hep hap wannabe parts had to go… I guess that’s what they wanted as a group but sadly, it’s not my cup of tea. Hope there’s other songs that I like.

  8. I was a huge fan, loved all their previous songs when they were in jype, especially songs JB and Jinyoung wrote, like Page, Sunrise and Runaway. But since they left, all their songs sound like rush to release, always missing elements, they left to have creative freedom which is good for them but they should be thankful JYPE didn’t let them release songs like this before, at least before they released complete songs with full elements, now they’re just another group with nothing to show song. Very disappointed with this, this guys wrote Breath and Last Piece, where is that same creativity? Or is it all thanks to jype? Nahh…. They can do much better.

  9. I 100% agree with what you said about the second verse. The lyrics weren’t awful, but they were bad enough to distract from the integrity of the production. That aside, though, I did enjoy the song a fair amount. It’s slightly generic and not perfectly cohesive, but where it is strong, it’s strong. (I really enjoyed the chorus’ melody.) It’s also just nice to see all seven of them on a track again — even if that track is only 2 minutes long.

  10. I was not even into them during their JYP years, but seeing them together brought back so many kpop memories.

The song has its moments but fails to leave any impression, to be honest, I’ve never thought their music was great, their solo works were actually more interesting for me.

  11. I’ve been a very very big fan of Got7 ever since like 2017, so I was anticipating that comeback for a long while.

I actually didn’t like Bambams’ style of music aS much and I wasn’t a big fan of NaNaNa, so I was a bit scared of how Python would turn out, but I was very postively surprised!

I love the song and the different verses, the english parts don’t even bother me.

I kind of feel like they’re once again figuring out, which style they like best when they have complete freedom in their creativity, but hearing that song made me so happy, honestly.

As someone whose bias is Youngjae, I kind of wish he had a bigger part, because his Power Vocals have always been my favorite parts throughout their songs, but nontheless I still love it and find myself humming the tune.

I’m so glad they’re back, tbh, so I love it!

I know most people on this post might not agree with me, but that’s not a problem! We’re all at least a bit of a fan of them after all ^^!

  12. Had a similar reaction on the first listen, but after giving it a week I had a whole day on repeat. It really grew on me. I like that it was simple and nostalgic.

  13. I don’t like it. The genre is just not for me, and the English lyrics are too close to the cringey side of cheesy.

That aside, I did not realize how much I’ve missed Got7 until now! Seeing videos of them being happy together on stage and performing old songs makes me so happy.

  14. It’s kpop and PYTHON is a perfect song for a group to perform. All this talk about pre and post jype is bizzare. They all have solo careers where they pursue music that is more to their individual tastes. I’m curious what songs you listen to in kpop to have such opinions coz most tts are made to be easy to listen to.
