Song Review: 3WAY – Mm-hmm

Rookies 3WAY Project have rebranded to 3WAY, which somehow seems even more provocative as a group name. Confusingly, the group is actually comprised of nine members, but I guess 9WAY doesn’t have quite the same ring to it. In any case, nine is divisible by three so I’m sure there’s some meaning there.

I worry whenever I see a new song title that’s also an onomatopea. This tends to point toward repetitive, monotonous hooks. “Mm-hmm” isn’t exactly a galvanizing expression, but the track is a bit more dynamic than I expected. The beat has a nice bounce that incorporates retro synths into its sharp percussion. And while the hook is every bit as vacuous as I feared, the blend of vocal and rap on the verses works pretty well. It’s nice to hear more variety in flow, with verse two especially effective. I enjoy the way the song leans back into its chorus, though I wish there was a greater sense of ambition at the song’s center. Sadly, Mm-hmm ends on a clunker, with loud chants taking precedence over more creative choices.

  1. Uhm, “3WAY” isn’t exactly an ideal name if you’re tryna aim for global success, yk? *insert that one GIF of Taemin looking here and there awkwardly*

Anyways, the song is decent, the production’s also decent and kinda dynamic with how the percussion blends with the wobbly-ish bass synths in the background for the verses and then blends with a weird whistle-like loop for the chorus. The hooks could use some improvement, but overall, it’s an alright debut.

    Rating’s the same.

  2. They just don’t check with native speakers do they when they pick a name like that. I had to look it up, 3WAY is also known as WWW which stands for World Wide Wonder. mmm hmmm indeed.

Anyway, song, sounds like mid-tier Stray Kids sans Felix’s bass.

The mmm-hmmm hook sounds like the songwriters were trying hard to be sensuous and lean into it, and its just not. Its no Mirotic I got you-ooo ooo ooo under my skin, which is slinky as hell. They just don’t commit to it fully. The choreo doesn’t even match what it could be. Set up the possibility and …. its a miss.
