Song Review: Newbeat – Hiccups

Ahead of their debut later this month, boy group Newbeat is previewing their sound with several pre-releases. First up was the quirky JeLLo last week. Now, they’re cementing their style with Hiccups. It’s clear Newbeat will be aiming for a quasi-retro, somewhat gimmicky hip-hop.

There’s no shortage of boy groups doing this sound, which may make it difficult to stand out amongst the crowd. To catch my ear within this well-trodden sub-genre, a group needs to find excellent material that somehow pushes things forward rather than simply regurgitate tropes we’ve heard time and time again. There are moments in Hiccups that show potential, but they’re couched within a ton of silly boy group posturing underlined with hiccupy sound effects. Newbeat pull it off as well as anyone, but I’m just not the target audience for this song.

  1. It’s giving male version of Young Posse and I don’t like it. Like what happened to fun kpop? If I want to listen to rap then I’ll go listen to rap music. This is my frustration with kpop and its unnecessary need to have “rappers” in all their groups.

So we have to sacrifice an A.C.E. comeback for this?

I’ll check out the debut only because I find thier styling and video editing pretty interesting.

  2. “‘Cause I like it down, be dumb, dumb, be dumb
I slam dunk it up ’cause we got that funk”

“And I don’t pop like many young guys”

“Girl, we the best, danggyeojin trigger like a chicken game”

  3. The song’s alright I guess.

I wish Newbeat would actually bring a New Beat to kpop.I mean,A.C.E debut with a style that you almost never heard in kpop.Instead, they went for a sound that 99% of boy groups are on right now.
