Song Review: NMIXX – Know About Me

Despite hailing from one of K-pop’s biggest agencies, NMIXX’s ascent has been slow and steady. While their debut single polarized fans, the group has surged in popularity with each passing year and started to develop a diverse catalog of sounds. Their singles tend to be very hit or miss for me and often take some time to grow, but overall I find the group quite charming. We’ll see if time will be kind to Know About Me, but the song takes some odd turns that make my initial reaction tough to gauge.

NMIXX have become known for their vocals prowess, so it always feels weird when their music has them talking more than singing. Know About Me carries touches of the NMIXX charm — most notably in the tight harmonies that echo the sing-talk of the chorus. It makes me wish for more, especially as we veer into a needlessly loud bridge. At its best, Know About Me has an aloof coolness that keeps the listener at arm’s length. Despite their sing-talk, the chorus and post-chorus are most effective. I especially like the way the second verse acts as a build between choruses. This sense of drama returns during the song’s bridge. An injection of melody here would have done wonders rather than the shout-sing approach we get, but the instrumental pulses with an exciting sense of ascent.

In fact, Know About Me would be stronger if it dispensed with its tired trap aesthetic entirely and reveled in a more crisp EDM soundscape. The production drags more often than it should, which is only made more obvious during the moments when the instrumental ramps up. With that said, Know About Me is dynamic enough to reward repeated plays. Right off the bat, I enjoy it more than last year’s See That, which went on to become a nice hit for the group. I’ll be interested to discover where this one takes me over the next few weeks.

  1. Ehhh, I don’t know about this one. This is so oddly subdued, and the sing-talk approach doesn’t really work for me. Though I can appreciate its aloofness, it still doesn’t work for me. I kinda wish the bridge led to a stronger, climatic final chorus instead of moving back to square one. I feel about this the same way I feel about Le Sserafim’s Easy— muted trap song with mumbling melodies that serves as background music than an enjoyable piece.

    7 (7, 7, 8, 6) for me.

  2. I don’t know, those verses and the chorus with a trap-like feel aren’t really convincing me. It’s not the kind of musical production I usually associate with them, although they can adapt well to any style. I’d give it a 7.5

  3. I feel like in terms of production and sound exploration, FORWARD marks that as its strongest point (say all you want about Golden Recipe, it still holds some weird, mutated charm to it). The problem is that most of these do not get enough air time to flourish. Know About Me is not bad but could still use a bit of a bridge added to the one that is technically there, maybe some more outro flair. But Papillon and Ocean definitely needed more.

As for Know About Me, I love the production (I say this weening off a DENONBU binge, and while not as intense as some of the production there, it makes me think of it). The dance break was especially a pleasant surprise. Still needed something else to it.

    (7, 9, 8, 8) = Also an 8 but not across the board.

      • JESUS CHRIST. But yeah. Never thought I’d say this but my critique with Golden Recipe specifically is that it gets a bit too much time for comfort lmao. It can be fun, but only if you really feel like it.

Favorite song for me is Papillon. I was always excited for that one, and while it did not exactly fit what I expected, it is still solid for what it gives us. We need like a remix album or something where someone can flip this in the style of like, Turquoise Death or Machine Girl. THEN we’re cooking.

Fantasy booking aside, I would just like them to stretch what they have more, both in experimentation and material. That does not negate how good a chunk of the material is produced already tho.

  4. Ehh… I don’t know how to feel about Know About Me at initial listen overall but there were some aspects with the track that I Iike. Hopefully this becomes a grower.

BTW I was surprised with how much I liked their new album, especially the production and vocal direction. All of the producers went off on the songs.

  5. I loved Dash, really enjoyed See That, but this one is hard to judge. I think it begins too subdued, and I felt like I was waiting for the initial chorus/drop when the song was already two-thirds over. It has some good ideas, but I think they could’ve been developed better. I’m also interested to see how my perception will change with more time.

  6. JYP doesn’t know what to do with NMIXX and it shows

Mixx-pop is a made up genre that never existed in the first place and it is trapping NMIXX members to release these dissonant, jarring and disorganized music. NMIXX is one of the most polarizing and controversial kpop groups to ever exist. NMIXX was known for stealing SM style beat change music, most notably Aespa, as well as ATEEZ’ music video and pirate concept. When that didn’t work out they went out and tried to steal New Jean’s style of easy-listening music. Again which failed to top the charts.

JYP has no clue what to do with NMIXX and it shows. Lets look at the members in general:

    1.       The group lacks notable star power and star quality. From the beginning they focused on Kyujin who was not even the visual attractor of the group. Take for example Minji from New Jeans, Wonyoung from Ive and Kazuha from Le Sserafim, these are the visual anchors of each group that attracts fans. Kyujin is not in the same league. She does not attract supporters but only detractors. She is known as an idol who does too much as if she has something to prove. Her overdancing and over facial expressions are too annoying to look at

    2.       Their tones are extremely controversial. Just because you have good technique doesn’t mean you sound pleasant to the ears. Lily has one of the worst tones in kpop. She always ruins NMIXX songs whenever she sings because her tone is too stand out and it is too noticeable. Her high notes sound like shes shouting at you and theyre ear-piercing. She likes to sing non-sense lyrics in their songs which have no meaning in translations.

    3.       Haewon isn’t a good leader. I feel she is more of a youtuber than an idol. Why is she always appearing in youtube videos and not music. She is an idol not a youtuber she needs to stay in her lane. I have seen her more in non-singing video than actual singing. Her job is to sing not to make people laugh. I also feel like she is doing too much in her videos its becoming too cringe just to look at her

    4.       Bae is a confusing member more like the member who gets overshadowed a lot. I don’t even know what role she plays in NMIXX since NMIXX doesn’t even have definite roles like main dancer, rapper, singer etc theyre all too vague

    5.       JIwoo: I will never understand JYPs decision to debut someone like Jiwoo whose weight was a cause of concern and controversy. Her weight definitely dragged down NMIXX image and let them start with the wrong foot. Her tone is also equally polarizing, not as much as Lily but to this day I still don’t know why she sings like that

    6.       Sullyoon should’ve been the center and she should’ve been given more work. As of now she is appealing like a door handle. Theres nothing visually attractive about her considering revelations she underwent with plastic surgery. Its also revealed that she fakes her double eyelids. She has an artificial look towards her.

Looking at their latest release which is another “alleged without clear change up” mixxpop song which nobody likes this music. It’s not even charting in south korea. Their concepts are not well established and their identity is too ambiguous. I don’t even know how to describe this group. People say theyre a group that can sing live but that doesn’t matter much when you look at reality. JYP is fumbling NMIXX and fumbling badly. He doesn’t know what to do with this group by giving them weird songs. Being able to sing live isn’t an identity especially when it’s used to hate on more successful groups. They also haven’t been able to maintain their alleged million album sales which again is controversial for allegedly being fraudulent (high chance it is). They also ended up faking a live vocal performance during one of their university music festivals again suspiciously around the same time as le sserafims coachalla performance. If you have to pull stunts like these, you don’t deserve praise but only condemnation and rebuke. NMIXX fandom has questionable alliances by betraying their family group just for votes. They voted against stray kids who has been supporting these girls even by letting them perform openers at their music festival only to be stabbed in the back for establishing a voting alliance with BTS. All the hate that NMIXX receives since debut is well deserved.

Just because you can sing doesn’t make you an idol what matters most is star power or star quality which NMIXX lacks entirely. Theyre forgettable and the only reason people talk about them is because NMIXX is leveraging Le Sserafim’s hate train to gain traction. it’s a shameless move and thankfully its not working. Let me know when they can perform at Tokyo Dome, chart on top 100, sell over a million albums (without fraud), and have deals with luxurious overseas brands then we can talk.

  7. I know in theory that they’re one of the most talented groups of the recent generations skill-wise, but their music makes me forget so 80% of the time.

  8. It’s not as great as Dash but I still quite like it. I personally like the rest of the album more, especially Slingshot, that song is just soo good and feels soo NMIXX in the best way.

  9. I might be one of the fews who enjoys Nmixx mixpop songs. Give me O.O and See That again, please.

This song however, is a pass

  10. ok song, not very memorable though, high horse was a lot more interesting to me. But I still can’t get used to Jiwoo’s (I think it’s her?) rap, feel like she doesn’t really have the tone, groove and attitude for it. should just make her sing like the others her voice seems to be a bit lower so it works nicely too for that.

  11. This whole album of theirs was such a trip. I like NMIXX at their most experimental so I’m here for it though.

Oddly enough, this TT was the tamest of the 6 tracks and I would assume the most GP friendly. Still, I really enjoyed it. The dance break is it’s weakest part along with the outro (or lack thereof). Personally, while the anti-drop works and I like it, I wish one of the builds to the chorus would have met with an exclamation and got bigger rather than chilling it back down.

As an NMixx superfan, I’ll give my heavily biased rating anyway. (8,8,8,10) = 8.5

As a bonus, here are my current song ratings for “Forward” (still heavily biased):

    High Horse (10,10,10,10) = 10

    Slingshot (10,9,8,10) = 9.25

    Golden Recipe (10,9,8,10) = 9.25

    Papillon (10,10,8,10) = 9.5

    Ocean (9,9,9,10) = 9.25

  12. Actually I’m in the minority but I really liked this one. I find it’s very XG coded….? But the hook draws me in, way more than Easy by Le Sserafim. I still prefer Dash and Love me like this by them, but this is a close third favourite. Oh and High Horse??? OMG that song is so unique and haunting. Instant favourite here!

  13. I watched the video this morning and the chorus admittedly has been stuck in my head but honestly? It needs more wild NMixx chaos. I think they overcorrected too much and now are making music that’s good but not as imbued with their individual color. I can easily see myself listening to this a lot but I wish there was a crescendo or that they had a bridge that shook things up a bit.

    • If you haven’t listened to the rest of the album, it sounds like that is what you are looking for. This TT is like a wild child behaving the best they can in public and the album is like them on a sugar binge at home

  14. I’m super impressed with this group because, to me, they’ve been on a roll since Dash. I feel like they’ve only gotten better with each release and this song is also a step in the right direction (Let’s see what the EP sounds like).

I agree with Nick when he says that having a group with such vocal prowess, feels weird given them a sing-talk chorus. Luckily, the verses and the bridge give the song energy and let the members show off their vocals.

In some ways, this reminds me of LE SSERAFIM’s “Easy,” both songs use trap beats, which I love and it’s frankly a way to get me hooked on any song lol, but “Know About Me” has a lot more going on in the vocal department and the production department.

This is a 9, but I’m sure it’ll grow on me.

  15. you know the gg industry is fucking doomed when nmixx of all groups is doing slower/gentle songs (and yes I’ve heard their softer b-sides before, I know this isn’t their first try at this)

straight 8 from me as well, because the song itself is good, but the fact that something like this came from the same group that gave us dash & see that?… yeah, I’m not sure how to feel about it.

    • I mean, they did Party O’ Clock, although not as subdued as this. (Though I’d worry more if aespa did a song like this and they’ve always led with maximalist title tracks)

      Like

      • Party O’clock wasn’t that slow though, more like a bright song. I really like that one too. Roller Coaster was a little more subdued but I absolute loved it.

Know About Me feels a little too subdued in total, but it still has a few moments where the energy comes out so I’m expecting it to grow on me. I just feel it could have had the potential to be a stand out track if its ideas were developed a little further.

        • to me, this isn’t the first time an Nmixx b-side has won me over a lot more than the title track off the same album. Run For Roses was a standout on Fe3O4: Break and the same can be said for the other tracks on this album, particularly High Horse, Papillon, and maaaaybe Slingshot, though that last one I’m divided on since it feels like a Loona demo of sorts.

          Like

      • as maxr1998 said, Roller Coaster is a better example of Nmixx trying their hand at being subdued, as Party O’Clock wasn’t really soft, just not their “mixxpop” style. to me, it seemed like a weak version of Red Velvet’s “red” style, especially with the tones of the chorus. i’d give it an 8 (7, 8, 8, 9) though, as it’s one of my favourite tracks from Nmixx. what are yours? 😀

i think for Know About Me, they could have switched up the part in the end chorus where the production really kicks in with the main chorus? that might’ve helped elevate the dragging feeling the song has.

also, aespa had Better Things and Live My Life, neither of which were as floaty as Know About Me, but are both far from their Next Level/Savage/Supernova genres.

  16. Basically, JYP’s take on XG’s R&B-adjacent tracks (think Left & Right), and a pretty mediocre one. Not for me, though the intro vocals did allude to an interesting sense of haunting whimsy

  17. I guess I’m one of the few who liked this on first listen? It feels subdued for NMIXX for me (probably to appeal more to the GP), but I enjoyed its R&B and trap vibe. Not my favorite TT or song by them, but I still enjoyed listening to the song and watching the MV. Solid 8 for me. I never know what to expect with NMIXX, but that’s part of the fun.

  18. I’m gonna be a hater and say another disappointing Nmixx release; this is a 6-6.5 on a good day. It’s like wanting to buy Aespa at a store but having to settle with a stray kids release instead. All K-group releases this year have been a snooze fest in terms of music quality and aesthetics, also why is every music video this year so grey and muted as well??

  19. I actually kind of like it. Is this a JYP-written song? I say that because it sounds like En Vogue and the New Jeans sounds put together, and only someone like JYP would be able to know and mimic old R&B pop like En Vogue (see for example “My Lovin’ – you’re never gonna get it”) (no you’re never gonna get it) (not this time) (no your never gonna get it).

Its slinky and contemporary yet old fashioned. The bonkers break hits at the right point too and adds their own spin on it. Yes from me.

  20. This is a good song to play in the background for me, I love the production but I think if they pushed that climatic bridge a bit it could’ve been something great

  21. I’m more into their abrupt change ups, O.O, Dash and See That are my favourite of their songs, makes them stand out in the generic kpop world, but this soft approach is much needed in between comebacks, like they did with Party O’clock, they don’t want to cement only mix pop in fans minds, like Itzy did and receive backlash for changing up suddenly. This way fans don’t know what’s coming up… Is it change up or not?¿ We have to wait and see… No disappointment either way. I’d rate this an 8 also, they should make proper songs for at least 3minutes.
