Following fellow member Yeonjun’s solo single GGUM last year, TXT’s Beomgyu has emerged with his own track. Panic has been labeled as a “mixtape,” though by its very nature a mixtape needs more than one song to be an actual “mix.” More accurately, this is a digital single that Big Hit likely didn’t want to saddle with all the pressures of full promotion. In any case, it’s a decent extension of the group’s more rock-oriented sound.
There seems to be a huge space for angsty soft rock in K-pop’s boy group landscape and Panic slots nicely into that oeuvre. The instrumental has some meat to it, cruising along insistent guitar. It’s incredibly moody — the kind of song you’d get your feelings to rather than simply enjoy. Beomgyu’s voice is a fine enough vessel for this material, though I wish his performance showcased more grit and personality. Combined with a song that feels quite generic, the whole package lacks a bit of spark.
When it comes to material like Panic, it’s important that every bit of the production feels authentic. I’m not sure I buy what this song is selling, and its energy is too inert to distract attention away from that feeling. While is a promising sound for Beomgyu, the execution is too flat to make any noticeable mark.

I bet you this song was pitched to HYBE and their immediate thought was “remove the pre-chorus, the bridge oh and also no final chorus please”. I like this song a lot but there are a few things I wish were a tad different. I need a punchier guitar, was waiting for a loser=lover esque pre-chorus, didnt get one. I feel like this songs stays the same throughout and just needed to be more dynamic. Still not bad by any means. Just not very good. As someone who genuinely loved TXT’s music, their music has recently whelmed me, and thats just not enough.

I am feeling radio friendly pop-rock circa late 90’s-early 00’s. I suppose that makes it “timeless”? Bands whose name I hardly remember – I had to google just now “the band that sang “Closing Time” that played once an hour every hour. Kids, for once I will not say back in my day we had it better, because just like Spotify, songs would be in too frequent rotation and we could do nothing about it but change the radio dial.
Snark aside, the song it pretty good, rating might be a notch or two too low.

I have the same thoughts. I’m someone who quite likes this type of rock so it’s a little frustrating to hear such clean vocals on a song that demands rawness.

It’s nothing to write home about, but stylistically what I would expect from Beomgyu’s solo work. It also aligns well with his previous solo experiments. I think I like Sukidakara and Wonder a bit more.
Beomgyu is my ult, though, so I’ll eat this up and await for more and better to come.
