Song Review: Eastshine – Lucky Tonight

I’ll always check out K-pop’s “nugu” groups because often their music will take more risks than their bigger-named peers. However, these efforts are also constrained by budget, making the execution a bit chaotic at times. I didn’t care for boy group Eastshine’s earlier work enough to write about it, but the teasers for new single Lucky Tonight promised a funky disco sound that made my ears perk up.

Lucky Tonight has its heart in the right place. It’s light on its feet and catchy. However, every element of the track is operating at a “6” when it could have been cranked up to a “10.” There are so many other boy groups delivering this material to a highly polished degree, so if you’re going to travel down the disco-funk road at this point you need to do something incredibly memorable (or incredibly melodic!) to stand out. Lucky Tonight is neither of these things, but it’s a step in the right direction for the group.

  1. Easy breezy kpop funky jazz lite. The song craft itself is fine. The chorus has an actual hook in it. (After only two listens, I know it goes like “swimming swimming swimming swimming swimming swimming out tonight”, idk what they are really saying.)

What is missing is more charisma and higher production. Compare this to SHINee “Dream Girl”. I know, two completely different songs in effect because SHINee perform the shit out of Dream Girl and the SM producers threw in all sorts of gee whiz over the top of it all and that makes it awesome.
