Song Review: Moon Sua x Siyoon (Billlie) – Snap (ft. Sokodomo)

Despite a promising start, girl group Billlie has experienced some growing pains as they attempt to carve out their musical niche in the K-pop market. Today, they’ve opted for their first unit track. Snap brings together lead vocal Moon Sua and lead dancer Siyoon on a hard-hitting hip-hop track. While it may showcase some skill, the song itself does nothing for the group’s burgeoning legacy.

From the outset, this style of idol hip-hop track is not for me. Its blend of undulating bass and pots-and-pans percussion has been done to death and triggers too many pressure points in my brain to make the music listenable. Something about the tone of these instrumentals now feels like nails on a chalkboard to me. I really wish the K-pop industry would lean into different styles of hip-hop. The genre is so much more than the shout-rap “I’m the best” posturing idols churn out over and over (and over) again.

Imagine my eye twitching every time the girls shout “snap!” in the hook and you’ve got a great image to anchor this review. Moon Sua and Siyoon perform everything well enough but none of it feels authentic and doesn’t highlight their strengths. Guest rapper Sokodomo is brought in for the briefest of verses — almost as an afterthought. As one of the track’s composers, I guess they felt he needed a cameo. To be honest, I’m not sure anything about this track was needed at all.

        • There is a lot of misinformation about the case that’s spread everywhere, especially on Twitter, but yeah, the girls/Attrakt are innocent. The Givers wanted to poach 5050 with Warner, and manipulated the girls into filing a case against Attrakt, using a fake Covid test to delay stuff for Attrakt. The things 3J accused Attrakt of were all the doings of The Givers employees (like the diets and throwing away snacks). Plus, Keena herself mentioned that Siahn/Ahn Sungil, the CEO of The Givers, actually reduced hers and the producers/writers of Cupid’s royalties, and increased his share of the song.

And besides, the initial injunctions ruled Attrakt innocent due to lack of proper evidences (+ keeping in mind that in most cases, courts often rule in favour of idols like Omega X and half of LOONA). And Attrakt also was a bit generous with the girls, giving them all a few weeks break so Aran could rest after a surgery, even delaying the filming of that Barbie OST’s MV.

      • I’m sorry, Nick, but can you delete this reply and all the replies to this reply? I don’t want to cause any trouble.

        • Will do if this thread gains traction. I’m not sure it will, though, given the fact it’s posted on an unrelated review. I see no trouble yet.

  1. I didn’t hate this track. The bridge and prechorus were enjoyable, but the chorus is repetitive and predictable. All the space around these parts feel underdeveloped. I may listen to it a couple for times for certain bits but that’s all
