Song Review: Oh My Girl – Oh My

Oh My Girl are celebrating their tenth anniversary with special single Oh My. Ten years is a huge accomplishment for any K-pop group, and Oh My Girl’s career has seen distinct phases — from quirky newcomers to “it” girls to veteran pop act. Oh My attempts to distill many of their influences into a refreshing bop buoyed by a heavy dose of nostalgia.

Most notably, Oh My‘s beat-heavy chorus seems to be stretching for the same effect as 2020’s viral Dolphin. That song stands as one of the group’s most iconic, so it makes sense to use it as a sonic springboard. However, Oh My doesn’t have enough melodic meat on its bones to enjoy the same buoyant result. Structurally, this is a very strange song. It’s as if the composers only wrote half of it and forgot to flesh out everything else. The verses bound along nicely. They’re not particularly memorable, but harness much of the bright energy that characterizes Oh My Girl’s best work.

Then, we hit the chorus. This segment is vocally sparse. Some might even call the melodies nonexistent. This approach can work if you’ve got a stellar bassline that immediately sinks itself into your memory (ie: Dolphin), but the instrumental here also lacks punch. There’s a vacuum of nothingness at Oh My‘s center — far from the stellar choruses of so many Oh My Girl classics. It’s such a weird choice that doesn’t represent the group at their best.

  1. Oh my, this one is mid-8’s for me. Partially because bias, but also because this is a carefree easy breezy summer bop. The song does not overthink how to do pop music.

Welcome back, OMG, hope to hear more from you.

  2. Another gg i like from 3rd gen who released mid songs for their 10th anniversary that don’t reflect their career. First was Gfriend and now Oh My Girl

I hope TWICE won’t let me down like these two

    • Honestly Season of Memories has majorly grown on me and, although it’s not a great comeback, it is a great anniversary song.

  3. theyre kinda third gens answer to apink if u think abt it:

    -never disbanded

-lost one member early on and another after contract renegotiations

-were their generations respective biggest gg for a year (2014 for apink and 2020 for omgirl) then their fame kinda petered out from there

    -debuted w an innocent concept

      • I really loved the verses, but when the chorus arrived, I was also slightly confused. It seems like they forgot something there. It’s still sufficiently catchy that I can vibe to it, and I’ll listen to it a lot. But I also recognize that Oh My Girl has much stronger material than this.

      • just a heads up, this will probably come off as dramatic

oh my girl debuted during a major time in my life and their music gave me life. By 2019 they were definitely my favorite group. While I was underwhelmed by nonstop and conflicted about it becoming a hit, I never saw their downwards trajectory coming. Title tracks were enjoyable but not instant, and a more than average amount of b sides felt like filler. That said, the impact they made on me keeps me checking out everything thing they release. I was feeling like I didn’t have the right to be disappointed anymore

Despite all of that I held hope that on their 10th anniversary they would remedy this and give us songs that felt classicly OMG. And somehow, it’s their worse song with a video after shark 😭. Is it better than a treacly ballad? I guess … But it doesn’t feel like anymore of a celebration

I really thought SNSD would be the blueprint for anniversary releases, but I guess no one was taking notes

I have no reason to be optimistic about them anymore,Ill just enjoy their earlier material

      • Listened once yesterday and the only thing that stuck out to me is how all their songs sound the same now. Boringgggggg. Give me one of their interesting songs again. Basically since Dolphin they’ve just been doing it over and over. Summer Comes was a nice break but other than that it’s been the same thing over and over.
