As Top Media’s first girl group, Odd Youth have their own path to pave. That path has been rocky so far — at least musically. Their output has trended toward the garish, aiming for quirky but more often landing closer to cloying. It’s nice to see a young group experiment with sounds. However, I’d prefer if those sounds were at least somewhat pleasant to the ear.
If you enjoy the sound of a strangled chicken set to a beat, have I got the track for you! I Like You‘s fitful arrangement melds brittle production with found sounds and plenty of hiccupping brass. It’s an acquired taste for sure, and provides a challenging soundscape for the girls to work with. Odd Youth are often forced to resort to chirpy sing-talk, exclaiming “I like you and you like me” over that aforementioned dying chicken. This is punctuated by a dull ping on the side of a metal pot. It’s all very cartoonish. I half expected Porky the Pig to appear at the end of the video bellowing “That’s all Folks!“.
I Like You is rhythmically interesting, offering a herky jerky flow that sounds as if a couple robots were attempting to fashion what they considered “dance.” The sound is definitely not for me, but I appreciate its willingness to think outside the box. I’m sure there will be a handful of listeners that absolutely eat this up. If nothing else, I’m very happy for them!

To be fair, either they can’t afford good producers, or that they know that even if they make good songs, it’ll not get noticed (nugu life…), so they resort to the opposite to get their 5 minutes of fame (X:IN’s My Idol comes to mind…)

Ngl, I expected you to put this in low-6s, if not a F, because of how Kidz Bop-like and almost cloying it is 😭
I like the percussions of this track, but the stuffed rubber chicken chorus grinds my gears a bit. It’s an acquired taste methinks, but well… I sense some good melodies, but they are masked by that chirpy, cutesy sing-talk mostly aped by ITZY copycats post-2020. Well… it’s an alright song ig.
6.75 (7, 7, 7, 6) for me.

Odd to see a typical big smile performance from the members over this experimental song. Not sure how I fall on the music yet, but the video concept is really cute and well done.

Oh my. I think I may have to bring out the anecdote about the kids trying out eeeeeeeevery sound on the synth in the music store while they waited for their music lessons. I mean, every button. That, but make it song length.

It was different but wtf was this? I only liked their predebut, quiet a lot even.

I’m the type of person who will generally be pleased by a new kpop track if it has some cool ideas. Even with unpleasant sounding textures in a song ( I’m thinking particularly of nada’s trippin) I can soften up to eventually. The dying chicken (funny but honestly a better descriptor than I could’ve come up with) is one that I don’t think I need softening up to, but it would piss me off if I heard it while already in a bad mood.
I didn’t care for their debut and from looks, to the song, and the mv this is a definite step up

I think the instrumental is actually fine. It just needs to be faster and also the vocals need to sync better with it.

I don’t know.
Anyway, about Hot Chicken, was it as bad as you thought?

I LOVE it haha! Seriously I´m a sucker for this kind of stuff. This has to be one of the K-Poppiest songs to ever K-Pop. Love the album as well. If you like this, may I recommend you Mrs Columbo – Frozen King? Not k-pop, but reminds me kind of this.
