Song Review: Chuu – Only Cry In The Rain

When last we heard from Chuu, she tried her hand at a pleasant synthpop sound. This seems to be very in trend for K-pop soloists, positioning them within the global market while still maintaining the more subdued vibe that’s taken hold of the industry’s girl group fare over the past few years.

Like past efforts, Only Cry In The Rain is pleasant but very lightweight. The song takes no chances, preferring to deliver an airy instrumental and soft melody. Even the music video has a hazy film over the top. There have been many tracks like this in K-pop recently and I’m not quite sure what to do with them. The song is objectively fine — a pleasant diversion that could soundtrack just about any activity. But with so much ear-catching music being released around the world every week, something like Only Cry In The Rain can’t really compete. I’m not sure it even wants to.

Like many of K-pop’s solo releases, the song comes down to Chuu’s appeal as an idol. She isn’t given much room to showcase personality here, but if you’re already a fan I imagine just hearing her voice will offer comfort and elevate the track’s sweet, simple melodies. For everyone else, Only Cry In The Rain will play well in the moment but likely get buried by dozens of competing releases as the weeks go on.

  1. It´s typical Chuu, which is already miles better than anything similiar. Love it! I still think Howl was one of the best albums in the past few years. I´m interested what people think of the B-sides, especially Kiss a Kitty. It´s ughhm… open to interpretation, let´s juts say that 🙂

    • I listened to the little clips Spotify gives you for the songs and instantly died when I got to Kiss a Kitty, it’s not even subtle 😭 just read the full lyrics too. Never beating the allegations lol

  2. While it won’t be counted as reinventing the wheel I do think it’s very engaging. The oo-oo/kuckoo in the chorus was VERY smart as a charm point and I think it will lend itself well to replays for sure.

  3. I think what you perceive as weaknesses are some of this song’s greatest strengths. The airy and soft instrumental, the hazy filter over the video, these were deliberate choices to convey a sense of dreamy nostalgia, and it works SO well in my opinion. They pull you in immediately and you become emotionally invested in the story. It’s beautiful.
