Song Review: Taeyong (NCT) – Rose (ft. Red Velvet’s Seulgi)

Rose is an interesting display of time travel. NCT’s Taeyong is still on hiatus as he fulfils his military service. This song was first unveiled in 2021 and the video premiered during an event last year. Now, it’s finally made its way online in time for Korea’s Rose Day. I don’t think we can call it a “single” per se, but it’s a nice little treat for fans waiting for his return.

A collaboration between Taeyong and Red Velvet’s Seulgi practically begs to be covered on this blog, but this style of song has never been for me. The instrumental combines airy coffeehouse softness with the occasional plonky percussion. The melodies waft around in an almost freeform way, crafting a vibe rather than a sharply structured pop track. On the plus side, both artists sound great (Seulgi especially), but there’s no shortage of great singers to enjoy in this world. I’m more interested in the song itself, which probably isn’t the right mindset to successfully enjoy music like this. I hope Rose finds its fans, because I know how long military hiatuses can feel when you love an artist.

  1. this song is very well loved and popular among both fans and non-fans so it already has found its fans. i believe you just have poor taste and lack much objectivity to give a sound critique. i mean, how are you equipped to give an objective review when you already say the song is not your vibe? you’re already going in biased, especially when the song is 4 years old.

  2. Nick, have you listened to the RIIZE album yet? they previewed it earlier on Weverse, except for a few songs, I don’t think all of them were previewed in full yet. the title track Fly Up sounds like a Disney/High School Musical song. I really liked Odyssey, Another Life, and Show Me Love.

  3. Seulgi is great on this. Taeyong, well, it’s there.

Where I hear a midtempo like this “coffee house” fare, I just wonder what the heck is the song about. Its about not much of anything. Its a song that exists to fill space and time. Not much humanity in it, nothing about the human condition good or bad happy or sad, just there lazing along inoffensively wafting along on the current making no waves.

Well, it looks like their fans are delighted, so they can have it.

      • The average drive by effusive fan commentary, with the ad hominem attacks on the blogger that they tend to do as they drop and run. For most of that type of post, I just scroll on by. Rule #1 of the internet: don’t argue with strangers on the internet. Rule #2: don’t get involved in a land war in Asia.

Nick posts on almost every kpop release every day, and also has a real day job too. I think he knows something about kpop, has informed opinions about it, and also some preferences which he openly states.

        … …. moving on … …

  4. Die-hard NCT stan here, so I’m supper happy to see this video-song, I had no idea it existed. It’s one of those releases I’m hyped about seeing the artists considering what’s going on with them (Red Velvet is now a trio and Taeyong is in the military). I’m also happy to hear Taeyong sing.

As per the song, let’s say that I love it less than I love the people signing it lol. It was a cute one but I’m not coming back to it. Love those two, though, especially Taeyong!
