Song Review: VVS – D.I.M.M

New girl group VVS have dropped two pre-releases, both of which have landed with a dull thud on this blog. Now, it’s time for their official debut. Given its predecessors, D.I.M.M doesn’t have big expectations to live up to. This is to its benefit, as the song is not particularly good.

The best thing I can say about D.I.M.M is that it dispenses with the cheesy gimmicks that made both Tea and Purrfect so irritating. Instead, the song attempts to paint VVS as hardcore rappers. From its undulous trap-meets-electro production to the cringey “I got them diamonds in my mouth” chorus and silly cursing, D.I.M.M is highly confrontational and utterly joyless. It’s not that idol groups can’t build their sound around hip-hop. Many successfully have in the past. But a song like this feels like it’s trying so hard to convince its audience of something we know this industry doesn’t possess. Hip-hop thrives on lived experience and authenticity. In comparison, D.I.M.M comes across as parody.

And more than anything, this song just isn’t fun to listen to. There’s an anger laced throughout the entire track, and not in a clever, cathartic way that invites you to join in on the vibe. It’s just an airing of grievances painted with bad posturing.

  1. Not to poke a bear again, but I just looked them up and learned that their leader is apparently friends with Kiss of Life’s Julie, which does put all of these attempts at hip-hop posturing in a certain light. Well, maybe it’s just a phase…

  2. The girls show promise, but the material they are given, it’s either gimmicky (ahem, Purrfect) or just so… juvenile and all bark, no bite.

This is your average trap hip-hop you’d prolly hear in Soundcloud, laced with a cringey affected “diamonds in my mouth” hook, cursing to sound cool and tough (I’m not against cursing in songs, but in these cases, it’s just corny) and boring, cloying posturing. I like me some hip-hop-based idol groups, but you need to spice up your game and pull some tricks up your sleeve in that genre which groups like XG (ik they’re not K-Pop, but somewhat K-Pop adjacent), 82MAJOR and even Young Posse do well, but here, they’re just sticking to the most generic, juvenile execution, mostly laced with gimmicks.

    6 (6, 6, 6, 6) for me.

  3. The maknae is only 15 yo, I just looked it up. I’m not saying you can’t do hip hop if you have a member who is 15 yo, you can, but not *this* style of hip hop. It feels really out of place.

  4. i still cant believe this is a product of mzmc… someone tell him the girl crush era of kpop is over and makes this sound outdated. i’ll stick to badvillain or young posse thank you.

  5. What sucks is that with the nature of fandom, some people actual fall for this attempt at branding themselves as hardcore. I’ve seen people say that vvs are like no one else. “they’re not just idols”” No one’s dropping 4 minute songs of straight rap”. It’s incredibly eyeroll inducing and I hate thinking about meeting these sorts of people if I ever went to a kpop related event

I’m all for longer music, but the length doesn’t matter if the song makes me want to press skip. I was a bit of a vvs apologist with tea, but now they’re young posse adjacent but missing the fun

    • If you read the comments section of the youtube video you will see someone already claiming that they are being innovative for releasing a 4min song full of curses. 😂

  6. The lyrics are so out of place too. What exactly are they flexing? They are rookies for crying out loud. If it were, say, Epik High performing this then I’m sold because people like them get to rap “My squad came from the basement, If you look at us now we’re shining rings” and actually have money, trophies and daesang awards to show for it.
