Song Review: Dignity – SWEET2TH

Dignity debuted last summer with a fun new jack swing track and an even better b-side that recalled the best of late-second-gen group Block B, landing them on two of my year-end countdowns. But like many rookie groups from small agencies, they swiftly disappeared after that. Almost a year later, they’ve finally returned with new single SWEET2TH. Unfortunately, the song struggles to replicate their past glories.

I’ll never say no to a bright boy group track in K-pop, mostly because this style is often accompanied by strong melody. SWEET2TH boasts all the necessary energy for this concept but devolves into the kind of chant-heavy hook that instantly yanks me from a song’s momentum. This chorus is immediately followed by a more melodic segment, but even here the tune doesn’t stretch itself enough. This approach continues into the verses, including an energy-killing second verse shift. Overall, SWEET2TH is harmless fluff but will easily get lost among stronger releases and certainly pales in comparison to their debut.

  1. This is okay. Average boy group punk rock-pop. But definitely falters in comparison to Fire or even Cool Down.

    Rating’s the same.

  2. It needs more punch, more energy, and louder higher vocals. Otherwise meets expectations.

I was road tripping the past weekend, ditching the kids at various summer camps. A good 1,300 miles = 2,000 km. Lots of time to listen to everything on my green ipod, including everything I have ever bought from Golden Child. Compare this debut era “Let Me” from Golcha to the one above. It is essentially the same song, but the difference is punch, energy, and louder higher vocals. While this song was playing I actually shifted into singing the chorus of “Damdadi” over the top of this song’s chorus – can’t stop me girl girl girl – easily, that’s how much this song is interchangeable with others.
