Song Review: Jessi – Newsflash

Jessi’s career has evolved in stages. There are times when her music is as hot as can be, but also many instances where her celebrity feels on the backburner. I have a huge soft spot for her place in Korean music, as she boasts a fiery charisma that’s different than most idols. It’s always lovely to have her back, even if a song like Newflash isn’t essential to her discography.

I haven’t written about a new Jessi track since 2023, which is a lifetime in K-pop’s fast moving game. That makes Newsflash a true comeback single and a chance for Jessi to showcase her talent to a new generation of listeners. As such, the boastful track is a suitable reintroduction. I like the old-school hip-hop production and Jessi’s voice streamrolls over every lyric with uncontested power. But if I place this within her catalog — even just the rap songs — it sounds a bit slight and unremarkable. “Newsflash” is an obvious and effective conceit and expresses sentiments we’ve heard from her music before. However, I wish the track centered itself around a more colorful hook. The chorus here is serviceable but not particularly memorable.

  1. This track has a lot of personality throughout, and I think the hooks are stronger than you give them credit for. I immediately wanted to listen to it again after my first listen.

Also I just love her and think she adds so much flavor to what can be expected from a female kpop performer

  2. It’s very Jessi. Really, only Jessi has the longevity and credibility to pull a swagger song off. She is a real survivor, and I am happy to see her back.

  3. Fun fact, for a while my friend was dating Jessi’s cousin. It made sense because she was a Korean-American girl from New Jersey. But I was still shocked when she was like, “Oh you like K-Pop? My cousin is actually in the industry. Have you heard of Jessi?”

  4. does anyone know who the guy in the video was? One of the producers or something?

ditto was Nick said about the song. I’ll add that jessi’s songs don’t really have the satisfying wordplay of other rap songs obvious and effective is kinda what I expect from her all the time. If it wasn’t for her charisma certain lyrics would come off as cringey

  5. This is a fire song, to be honest. It does share similarities with her older tracks, so it doesn’t feel like this HUGE comeback single or rebrand. Still, this is 100% right up my alley and will be tapping replay!
