Song Review: BLACKPINK – Jump

Over the past few months, the members of BLACKPINK have blitzed the market with a variety of solo work, making greater inroads to international markets than ever before. However, it’s been a whopping thirty four months since their last group title track. In K-pop’s fast-moving ecosystem, that’s enough time for a literal change in generations. But as they embark on a new tour, their relatively sparse discography needs at least one new track to wow audiences. Enter: Jump (뛰어).

Composed by a cadre of familiar names, Jump takes the BLACKPINK formula and injects extra bounce. Its official genre is listed as hardstyle, though this is augmented by quite a few other influences. The trumpeting instrumental is immediately ear-catching and reminds me of something you might hear as a World Cup anthem. Paired with a western motif, the production has great cinematic appeal, though it never goes quite as hard as you might expect. Still, I appreciate its madcap energy and forward-moving drive. We even get a thumping instrumental outro that pulls us further into hardstyle (though not as far as A.C.E went with their 2017 debut!).

I know I shouldn’t expect amazing melodic crescendos when enjoying a BLACKPINK banger, but Jump suffers from what so many of their hits do. Melodically, it’s limp and uninteresting. Given the sprightly production, I could easily imagine a killer chorus thrown over the top. Instead, the girls simply trace the lines of the rhythm, half rapping, half talking. The verses are actually more melodic, though even here much of the composition is constrained by the kind of one-note catchphrases that rarely elicit much excitement from me. So while I think Jump is average-to-bad as an actual song, the fact that it’s so brisk and celebratory gives it a slight edge over many BLACKPINK singles.

  1. i LOVE that dark pulsating beat so much it sells the drop chorus for me. this is the most interesting blackpink has sounded in a while so i see that as a minor win for everyone. my only major gripe is the outro… all that build up wasted… it was a weird decision to not let the track fully bloom into a climax cuz i think it stunted all the energy and momentum of the track.

  2. Love the beat, melodies are a bit lacking, and wished the climax was stronger (though I liked the key change) but damn, it’s been a while since I enjoyed a Blackpink single. Not up to their best (bar’s too high I fear), but it’s a decent improvement over the years.

    Rating’s the same.

  3. I usually don’t like their music but I rank this one among their great singles: Playing With Fire (their best), Lovesick Girls and As If It’s Your Last. Could have been even better with a big climax. But what we got is highly enjoyable.

    • also as some1 who goes to a lot of raves this shit is Not hardstyle 😭😭 the bulk of the song is eurotrance but the outro is just flat out hard techno its ridiculously easy to tell the difference from the kick alone

  5. It’s definitely better than a lot of their songs, but I feel like blackpink have done such a good job lowering my expectations that my first few listens of a new track will leave me pleased. While it doesn’t go hard like a “girls will be in girls”, just like that song I’m here for the production and “jump”‘s topline adds to the energy well enough. I’ll have to see how it ages because I’m just happy it doesn’t follow the same tired yg formula

The video is really fun, in a way I would expect from 2ne1 instead of blackpink. I couldn’t be one of the dancers, I would break my neck

  6. interesting. Ngl, I feel bad for their fans… Imagine waiting 3 years just for one song, and that being, a song that they could’ve done way more with. Oh well.

  7. their best TT since forever. I love the 90s trance rave sound clearly inspired by Da Hool “Meet Her at the Loveparade”. The verse had that Lovesick Girls fierce energy but the EDM chorus goes full gabber. The bass sounds are so much better in the real track compared to live. And all the voices shine scenically in that crescendo moment. Actually it’s their best single for me!

  8. It’s a banger for sure, built for the massive bass/light show on tour (which would make up for the weaker hooks/melodies) – and that trumpet instrumental is so catchy.

It’s just a shame that the MV is awful – a hastily put together mess of sloppy AI generated buildings/crowds and terrrrrible compositing of the girls over the top. Obviously done before they’re worked out the choreo we see on tour too, as they’re just bouncing around/posturing, rather than dancing. Feels more like a fan made MV (many of which are better than this to be honest) than an actual release. Hopefully they’ll release a performance version with the dance to make up for it…

    • I think the people in the MV are AI generated. I might be wrong but that was my impression, that almost the entire thing is basically AI. YG has money to do a proper MV and I don’t understand why they end up with this. I sincerely hope other acts don’t take this as an example.

  9. Its CRAZY to me how this gets a 9 for production. Its so flat its actually disappointing. The mixing doesnt help it either, it sounds like it was made in garage band.

  10. I get the point about this working for the concert setting but this will also go so HARD at the club, I can’t waittttt. 10/10 BANGAAA

  11. Funnily enough, I like the concert audios much more than the official one. This is a concert song, after all, it feels like it should be much louder and uh… less empty? The voices on the official version are also a bit hollow for me compared to how they actually sing/rap at their concerts. And at least live there was a great breakdown at the end! This version just… fizzles out. I hope someone makes a better remix out of these bones of a good song.

  12. God knows if I hate drops, but this one slaps, the riff is stuck in my head like forever. I was missing high energy music. It’s like they blended country, EDM and Jersey Club at once and they still sound like Blackpink. Was thinking Twice might have the better single but this one takes the cake in my books

  13. I also enjoy the track, but I’m very much regretting ever watching the MV. As I try to enjoy the song, ridiculous images from the MV assault my memory. AND, if you aren’t going to have any choreo, at least have fun like David Bowie and Mick Jagger in “Dancing in the Street”.

The one word part of the chorus is a huge letdown. Trumpets are nice. Outro is so disappointing, I was hoping for a classic YG turn it up to 11 and got a dud instead.

They had 3 years to fix these elements and couldv’e had another “As If It’s You Last” or “Playing with Fire” with the bones of this.

    7,9,8,8 = 8 as well.

  14. It’s painfully obvious the mv was filmed before the choreography finalized, i’m glad Blackpink took a different direction with the mv and music portion, but it was overall rushed.

  15. I personally find this to be one of the worst songs in their discography… we’ve waited years for the girls to have a comeback and this is what we’re given… I mean I can’t say I’m surprised given YG songs as of late have been pretty garbage, but I expected that after years of waiting that that waiting would be worth it (newflash it absolutely wasn’t) I know BLACKPINK can do better because the material they released in their rookie years were top tier, but the group songs have all been downhill from there… YG is in desperate need of new producers because as of late all their somgs have been absolute misses in my book… usually I’m a lot more positive about different song releases, but this one I just really can’t get behind… the song just sounds and feels rushed… it kinda feels like it just exists so that there was a new song for the girls to perform at their concert which also feels rushed in itself… it feels like there’s some deadline that YG is so desperately trying to make… the vibes I feel from this release is me doing an assignment days before it’s due despite having a month to do it… I seriously feel like the BLACKPINK girls have given YG some deadline after which point the group either leaves YG and does group activities under some other company or (and what I feel is more likely) this tour is a disbandment tour and because of the girls other commitments in their solo activities the timing of it all had to be rushed to fit into the given timeline from the girls… all of this just feels like a rushed nightmare despite the fact that there was so much time after the release of Born Pink where BLACKPINK wasn’t doing much… that time could’ve been used to make more songs and yet for some reason it just wasn’t… I know YG works on some sort of artificial scarcity model, but it leads to a whole lot of hype being built up around their new shit and then the results nearly always don’t live up to that hype and this is absolutely the case for this song here

  16. While it is not their best title track, it is not their worst either. The europop beat is good, the chorus is quite catchy, and the rap parts did not sound cringe at all.

It has all the good material for greatness, but it is such a shame that they did not take full advantage of it. It did not capitalize on all members strength especially jisoo and rose as they seems to sacrifice a more melodic approach to the song from the start.

The song production is good, but it comes repetitive in the second part without a good bridge. Yeah, it is fortunate that song energy kinda saved it from being mediocre.

  17. Coming back to say this song is 9/10 good, I wish it had an outro though and I checked and Teddy only has writing credits but he could of added some of his classic wacky outro dddu-dddu to the ending of this track and it would of been perfect🤣
