Throughout their career, Purple Kiss have waffled between sounds and concepts with varied success. Their music hasn’t quite caught on in the way I would have thought despite the group being very talented. This uncertain vibe carries through to new single DOREMI, which feels like their least notable release yet.
DOREMI is a stately mid-tempo, underlined by trap beats and featuring melodies that swirl around the track with more heft than most of their contemporaries. As I often say when it comes to mid-tempos, melody and production are key. You’re not getting a thrilling dance beat to keep you engaged, and in DOREMI‘s case the instrumental is pretty lackluster. I’m not buying the trap percussion on a song like this and the overall textures are too muted and noncommittal to work.
So, this brings us to the melody. Refreshingly, DOREMI is a fully-sung title track, taking advantage of the members’ skill. The chorus has a nice swell that becomes catchy in a graceful, understated way. However, the lack of a stirring instrumental really lets this refrain down. The production does little to lift the song, making the melodies feel at odds with their surroundings. It’s an odd mix, and one that doesn’t really work for me.

Its a day of songs sounding like older songs. Here, old Red Velvet. Peak Red Velvet, like 2017 2018. A time so long ago, all their songs have dropped off my ipod playlists and are now just a memory.
For Purple Kiss, I played the shit out of their Zombie back when.
Today, here, I appreciate that they did full vocals. For that, a flat 8 from me.

I’m puzzled by this direction in Purple Kiss’s music, and the low-budget bohemian music video is kind of concerning. To me, they’re known for off-kilter concepts and haunting vocals, but this is very straightforward and Yuki doesn’t get to rap. I agree that it sounds like Red Velvet, especially Psycho.
The b-side Lost & Found is really cool, though.

Yeah, a lot like “Psycho” in the verses. Not sure what the chorus sounds like yet, though.
Idk I like Sweet Juice and that’s about it for this group.

For Purple Kiss, it sounds more like a b-side than like one of their earlier title tracks. But for me, that’s not a bad thing. I’ve always liked their b-sides a lot – they’re really talented singers and that especially shows on their b-sides.
So I’m really happy with this release. I think the instrumental has a… music box sound to it? It’s really nostalgic, which I generally enjoy. 8.5+ for me.

The b-side Lost & Found is also awesome. Very full sound with a nice rock/pop style. Fits them really well.

the bridge at 2:40 reminds me so much of laboum journey to atlantis’ bridge that it instantly made me like the song; a little unmemorable overall but still pleasant, i could see myself coming back to it for sure!
