Song Review: Dragon Pony – Radio Silence

I’ve had my eyes on Dragon Pony since their stellar debut last year. Follow-up Not Out took their music in an angstier direction, but maintained their knack for a strong chorus. New single Radio Silence (지구소년) finds a middle ground that infuses an energetic sound with plenty of emotion.

An Tae Gyu’s vocals remain the band’s biggest and best calling card. You know you’re in safe hands with a vocalist like this. He’s got such a powerful way of performing that also manages to capture sentiment so well. I don’t think Radio Silence is as successful as either of their past singles, but that’s not for a lack of trying. The track explodes with passion. After a stripped back verse, the song launches into its fast-paced chorus, capped off by a nimble guitar riff. This sense of push and pull has become a hallmark of their music so far and works well here. And like their previous singles, I imagine this will only grow more appealing with time.

  1. i had the privilege of seeing dragon pony live in korea (twice!) and let me just say seeing the songs performed live really elevates the material. their title tracks sounded so much better when they’re chanted together by the band and the audience, not that the songs aren’t excellent enough on their own! i can already imagine this being performed live especially the cathartic chorus and im already getting chills. which is why i totally agree with you that for better or for worse, taegyu’s emotive and distinct vocals are what defines the group

  2. Ah, is that the guy’s name An Tae Gyu, you are on my radar, by name now. That line at 0:59 just kills me.

It sounds like two songs. The kick of 8 bars played twice that lead in the song and come around again after the chorus. Then everything else. They just don’t quite match.

    Rating is about right.
