Song Review: ZOONIZINI (Astro) – Some Things Never Change

Let’s get the obvious out of the way first: ZOONIZINI is an awful sub-unit name. I’m sure it has some special meaning as all K-pop monikers do, but saying it out loud instantly makes me feel stupider. ZOONIZINI is Astro’s third sub-unit, made up of members MJ and JinJin. Previous units delivered mixed results, but this combination seems as if it could be a lot of fun.

Let’s rephrase that with extra emphasis on “seems as if,” because Some Things Never Change is actively repelling me. It’s giving the most insipid version of early-2010’s radio pop fodder. Think: Train, B.o.B, Maroon 5, Macklemore. If those names send a shiver down your spine like they do mine, take a moment to steady yourself. It’s this specific combination of plonky white boy beat and sing-song, nursery rhyme chorus that sends me spiraling. It’s the evil twin of “catchy,” sticking in your head when you desperately want to remove it.

I don’t know what else to say beyond wondering if this particular song approach irritates others as much as it does me. I personally never want to hear it again, but there must be a big market for this sound somewhere. Mostly, Some Things Never Change has me lamenting the end of Astro’s imperial phase, which peaked with 2017’s absolutely brilliant Dream Pt. 1 album. Unfortunately, some things do change.

  1. Eh, given I was barely in kindergarten or early elementary when these kinda songs were in trend and didn’t become a huge music listener until I was like 13-14, I don’t have a knee jerk reaction to this as much as you do, but yeah, overall, this is just meh and not something I’d wanna seek.

    6.5 (6, 7, 7, 6) for me.

      • To be fair, my music journey in my elementary years till middle school was limited (obviously), so it was Bollywood, Big Time Rush and Winx Club songs and whatever would come up on VH1 and the car’s radio or whatever my friends would show me in that chronological order so I never really experienced these songs and judging by the reactions here, I should prolly thank heavens ig 😭

  2. ZOONIZINI sounds like an Italian dish. “Would you like your fresh-from-the-zoo zoonizini and zucchini with linguine, ziti, or rigatoni?”

      • And that’s saying a lot when Gnarly, Picasso and Debut Song have a bias point lower than this (unless Gnarly got that bias revised since it grew) and those 3 (esp Debut Song) are overall rated lower than this… 🥴

        • Yeah, this one just hits me in a specific sore spot. The song makes me actively recoil, even though objectively it may be better than some of those other songs. (Gnarly is probably somewhere in the 7’s for me, now)

  5. Unlike some people here I really don’t mind Charlie Puth or Lauv or other songs from the early to mid 10s, that style is always a mm away from sounding too “pretty and cheesy” but some songs were absolute bangers.
This one though, isn’t at that level, so even I find it quite boring and super super cliche’.
