EXO’s Chanyeol is slated for another solo album soon, and today he’s teasing us with pre-release Happy Accident. Alongside female vocalist Sole, he’s delivered a vibey slow burn guaranteed to take the edge off any feelings you may be having today.
Chanyeol’s singing voice has a very calming quality and works well within this sonic realm, but I can’t muster much excitement for Happy Accident. To me, this type of song feels functional — a calming balm rather than an interesting piece of music on its own. As a b-side, I appreciate the texture and tone this may lend the album, but it doesn’t strike me as a song so compelling that it needed to be promoted with a video. However, it’s clear Chanyeol enjoys performing within this kind of laidback style so kudos to him. I hope the title track has more oomph.

Sigh, another vibey slow burn. These things just don’t go anywhere. No highs, no lows, just there.

Irrelevant but kpop demon hunters is actively making me lose my mind, I have two friends who have categorically stated multiple times that they don’t like kpop because “corporate/sexist/shallow/manufactured/mistreatment” whatever and YETT they loooove that movie and want to talk about it constantly. I sent them mama by EXO and they just didn’t like it but they loooved “Your Idol” which is inspired by mama except it’s bad. I have never defended EXO so hard in my life, I even used the “SK’ national boy group” card and I’m an army. This really really seriously sucks and the universe is testing me.
I just saw Chanyeol which reminded me of EXO so that is the reason for this rant, I’m sorry 😭 Between that movie and the uninteresting music we’ve been getting this month, I guess I’m starting to get frustrated.

Ugh. I feel you. I’m actively trying to ignore Demon Hunters and waiting until people regain their sanity lol

It is just particularly difficult to not attribute this to plain xenophobia and racism. I don’t see how this gives more visibility to kpop. The way I see it, kpop and korean culture is used as a prop and non kpop fans have zero interest in diving deeper. Apparently the Netflix seal legitimises a product that previously seemed cringe and weird, but his legitimisation is strictly limited to the context of the movie and does not reach beyond that.
