Song Review: X:IN – RRRUN

I haven’t checked in with multinational girl group X:IN since 2024 on this blog, though they’ve released material since then. Their early reviews ranged from a peak of 6.5 to a low of 2.75 (!) for the unintentional comedy of 2024’s My Idol. I’d say they have nowhere else to go but up, but let’s see how they’re doing with new single RRRUN.

In K-pop, you can’t just “run.” You’ve got to RRRUN!! That title is more in-your-face than the accompanying song, which smartly harnesses an incessant groove for a “hip-sporty” (their words, not mine) concept that suits the girls well. The song is light on melody, centered around a spoken chorus that traces the rhythm rather than offer its own highlight. Even the rapped verses are largely just exuberant sing-talk. This will no doubt hinder RRRUN‘s longevity, but the track is fun enough while it’s playing.

For RRRUN, you just need to focus on the groove and treat everything else as window-dressing. I’m not sure that’s the best approach when it comes to getting listeners interested in the group themselves, but the instrumental pulls you along with ease. There are a few nice vocal turns in the pre-chorus and during verse two, but it’s the overall energy makes that this a new peak in X:IN’s career.

  1. I have learned recently that the group I used to pronounce as “Eksidd” is actually spelled out outloud like “Eee Ex Eye Dee”.

Oh, right, this group pronounced Ek-sheen. The sound does not sound good in my ear buds. What speakers did the producers test this on? I don’t know if the song is actually good because I just hear a wall of buzzy tin.

  2. Oh, love the bouncy beat, it reminds a lot of something ITZY would have dropped in 2019-20, I also get Rocket Punch’s Bouncy vibes from this. Wish hooks were stronger although the girls’ vocals are below average : but still, it’s a fun track and their best single so far

    7.5 (7, 9, 7, 7) for me.

  3. They keep improving bit by bit, so I’m guessing if I check back in on them in about a year or more they’ll finally have a tolerable song. This one is hardly above 7 for me.

  4. Video: Started good but soon somehow felt trashy and the girls makeup is kind of…vampire? Kind of “fresh” look but uninspired.

Song: Those voices were way to whiny for my taste and the rhythm of the song felt not interesting enough. Mostly somewhere between a rap and singing that felt kind of unsatisfying.

Judgement: May get a place in my catch-all playlist but that is it. 6 / 10.

  5. This group became a guilty pleasure. I know I’m listening to the equivalent of convenience store food kpop, but in small doses I’ve enjoyed the departure from all of the better choices they should be making and embracing all the unique questionable choices they do make.

We’ll see how long it lasts before I wake up and drop this group from my playlists ;p
