Ahead of their fourth full-length Korean album and tenth anniversary, the members of DAY6 re-signed their contracts with JYP Entertainment. And why wouldn’t they? The group has seen a massive rise in popularity over the past few years as their solid discography continues to grow. But with increasing success, it can feel like the band often picks their most palatable material for singles while leaving the most interesting stuff on the album.
New title track Inside Out is a mix of the familiar and the new. There are moments of adventure, most obvious during the first half of the chugging chorus with its cool, filtered vocal flourishes. I’m curious how an entire song would sound if arranged like this. This segment is surrounded by much less daring material, from the chorus’s surging second half to a frustratingly downbeat second verse. Its slight reggae influence is interesting, but the melodies aren’t strong enough to drive the tempo change.
Because of this, Inside Out feels as if it only succeeds in fits and starts. DAY6 are at a point where success is almost guaranteed, so I’d love to see them take that goodwill and shoot for the stars with a track that captures attention in an unexpected way. Knowing them, there are probably at least one or two of those songs on the accompanying album.

Wow, 10 years, congratulations Day6!!!
I think that central motif at 0:38 and when it repeats each chorus is interesting and has potential, but needed more marinating. Since they play live live, maybe with time playing it live live it will gel more.

its like every other day theres a song that gets rated a 7.5 (8, 7, 8, 7) since this year and maybe last

Which in a way… is exactly how it should be!
A 7.5 represents the exact center of a “C” grade, which is exactly average. “Exactly average” is bound to be the biggest pool of material released. That’s what makes it average! 🙂

Mind my unrelated question, but will you do a post about Girlset’s debut?

Nick is not going to review it, he already said it’s not good.

Never mind, Nick replied, so my reply here is pointless.

not at all! it was just a question, and if he doesn’t get to it, that’s alright. I like Nick’s reviews, and I just want to know what he thought of it.
I really don’t mean to be troublesome 😅 if he thought it wasn’t good, then I’ll stop asking

I’m not planning to. When it comes to non-Kpop releases from K-pop agencies, I give myself some discretion on whether I’ll review or not. Despite not enjoying much of their music so far, I’ve found Katseye interesting enough to review. I can’t say the same about Girlset yet. If they were to appear, it would probably be as part of my “global pop round-up” posts, but I’d have to like the song enough to spotlight it. Unfortunately, I don’t like Commas at all.

This song’s pretty fun and there’s plenty of potential buried treasures in the album too (for me)!

I don’t get Day6.
Sounds like the most bland pop-rock I’ve heard in my life.

They have some amazing songs, but the ones they choose to promote (at least lately) tend to be their blandest and least likely to offend any potential listeners.

I could not understand the choice of title track for this promotions, Dream Bus or So It’s the End is the better song in the album, even for casual listeners.

…On the bright side, the album is super strong.
