Song Review: Dayoung (WJSN) – Body

Those of us begging for a WJSN comeback have been tossed the smallest bone by Starship Entertainment today. The agency has unveiled member Dayoung’s first solo single with almost no promotion or build-up. However, beggars can’t be choosers and I’m happy to see WJSN back in any capacity.

I wouldn’t expect member solos to uphold the spacey, celestial sound of WJSN’s full group work and Body definitely takes a different approach. Like many K-pop idols, Dayoung’s opted for a fully English language track to appeal to as global an audience as possible. This always muddies the waters a bit for me and invites comparisons to western pop music rather than slotting nicely into the K-pop ecosystem. With that in mind, Body does an absolutely fine job delivering a frothy, easily digestible dance pop track.

Dayoung is a compelling performer and brings plenty of energy to Body. The first verse offers an exciting sense of build that made me think we were in for a major dance banger. Instead, the song pulls back for a more restrained chorus. This is a bit of a bummer and lacks the sticky melody needed to make the approach work. The hook is too monotonous for its own good, though this may actually improve the song’s longevity because it’s just so easy to listen to.

  1. It’s a fine pop song, though not really kpop. The song could be by almost anybody. “Put my body on your body … ain’t no body that can do it like you.”

What would make this a hit is how much money they have to spend on promotion and who knows who to get this plastered across multiple channels and shows.

  2. I’d argue the chorus is actually pretty strong, with it being long and catchy enough with the post chorus breaking up any monotony. I think it’s an excellent solo debut. 8.5/10 for me.

bonus points for filming at the same house as Sori.

  3. I’ve always appreciated Dayoung as a part of cosmic girls, but it’s cool to see how good she was on her own. The song is good, definitely gets the head nodding, but a bit generic. I went through a lot of seems like (hyolyn, tate mcrae, chungha, etc) could’ve performed this. Regardless I’ll still play it and it’s a joy to see dayoung

  4. But I must say that Dayoung sold this concept and threw everything at it. I hope this is charting well because I would love to get whatever I can from WJSN at this point.
