Song Review: ONEWE – Maze

Though ONEWE debuted all the way back in 2019, K-pop is currently experiencing a resurgence of bands and rock music in general. This opens possible inroads that were harder travelled before, though it also means a more stuffed marketplace. Today, they guys are back with their sixth mini album and its sprightly title track Maze.

For awhile, ONEWE’s music trended toward the downbeat, but recently they’ve found more pep in their step. This is a welcome development, even though none of their 2025 work has hit me in a big way. Maze is a burst of energy, stuffed with so many musical flourishes that it feels almost freeform at times. Sonically, it’s like Korea’s beloved coffeehouse sound bumped up to “eleven.” We’ve got brassy exclamations, perky guitar riffs and piano glissandos — among many other elements within its generous, 4+ minute frame.

With all of this going on, the song itself can easily become overwhelmed. It takes a very strong melody to cut through all the instrumental noodling and Maze‘s hooks struggle to define themselves. The tune sounds like something you’d hear as part of an OST: sprightly and enjoyable but pretty vanilla. Because of this, Maze feels ideal as the backdrop to a fun drama scene. Played on its own, my mind can’t help but wander.

  1. Its a simple case of “over produced”. They over egged it. Too many extraneous things added. The horn sample is the worst of it. Its like one of those survival reality shows for cooking baking sewing make-up and various other handicrafts, where someone has a pretty good minimalist design then adds some stupid glitter bow on it.

If one were to peel all the added boops and bops off and just tell the guys to play it live to tape like _____ (insert your favorite words of encouragement here), it would be better.
