TWS PLAY HARD: In-Depth Album Review – Caffeine Rush

CAFFEINE RUSH

Caffeine Rush is the only completely outsourced song on the new album without any of TWS’s usual composers participating in its creation. Among its composers are two of the industry’s most malleable (ie: generic?) names: Joombas and Ryan Jhun. Because of this, the song feels the most like “album filler” we’ve gotten from TWS yet. I could imagine just about any boy group performing it.

This isn’t to say that Caffeine Rush is bad. It’s lovely to hear the members’ vocals front and center. Their varying tones are one of my favorite aspects of the group and they don’t often get to dig into a sparsely produced mid-tempo track like this. It’s the closest TWS have gotten to “coffeehouse fare,” which makes sense given the title of the song I guess! Hints of exuberance still peek out here and there, but overall this is little more than pleasant breathing room before we amp things back up for a strong pair of closing tracks.

  1. Reminds me a lot of the b-sides on CLOSE YOUR EYES’ latest EP, which also felt very light and inoffensive while not leaving much of an impression.

  2. Nick, out of curiosity, do you know who the credits are behind TWS’ Japanese OST from the summer? I’d assume that since they’re OSTs, it won’t be from their usual (I checked Brand New Day and they’re not).

With that in mind, it’s amazing how both N.O.S.A and Brand New Day eclipses this song despite being OSTs.

    • N.O.S.A’s the work of Hiroaki Tsutsumi and Chika — both frequent composers of anime music.

I agree that both songs (especially N.O.S.A) are more successful than this despite different collaborators.

  3. When I see Ryan Jhun’s name I can’t help but think of him unexpectedly bursting into tears when he saw Minwook + the other BAE173 boys on Project 7. I was looking up Project 7 on Twitter and found a Korean BAE173 fan posting about him like “what the fuck is this weirdo crying for.” LMAOOOO
