Song Review: Ryugujo – Sugar

When Ryugujo’s new EP was released earlier this month I had a feeling Sugar would be given a music video eventually. And while I prefer the bombastic rock tracks Egure Mekure and Yohaku, the fact that this song is now a theme for member Yuki’s new drama makes it the obvious contender for extra promotion.

Absent the group’s founder and creative mastermind Avu-chan, it’s been interesting to see the change in their music. Summer single OSHIBAI managed to recapture their core spirit with new producers and much of the EP does the same. However, Sugar is probably the least Ryugujo-sounding track they’ve released yet. It has its pricklier moments during the rambunctious rap breaks, but the sweeter-sounding chorus is new for the group. It’s interesting to hear them perform in this airy style. It’s more generic than I’m used to, but they pull it off with plenty of polish.

I love how Ryugujo continue to lean into their alternative sound. Sugar may be rather predictable as a pop song, but it sounds more like something that would come from an indie band than an idol act. And just when you think the track may be holding back, it pushes forward with a unique texture or burst of percussion. Even without their former mentor, Ryugujo’s star power seems to be in good hands.

  1. I’m a huge fan of Ryugujo, and when I first heard this song, I thought, “Is this the first song of theirs that I won’t like?” But after listening to it several times, I started to like it. However, I still think that this style of music doesn’t capture their vocals in the best way.

Did you know that Tobe debuted a new group? I found out recently, and this song from their debut EP is good. https://youtu.be/jzcSuFX22_4?si=gPLt_WKHUzHiTJ5Z
