Song Review: I.MET.U – Velvet Trigger

In addition to actual debuts, “pre-debuts” have become a thing for K-pop idols. I’m not entirely sure what the point is apart from building hype without taking a huge financial risk, but the more music we get the better so I can’t complain. I.MET.U is an upcoming girl group from (checks notes) TikTok survival series Time Turner. Yes, TikTok.

With this information, you might expect Velvet Trigger to last about twenty seconds. In actuality, the song is not only complete but also confident and exciting. I’d go as far as saying this is one of the year’s best girl group debuts… except it’s not actually a debut! Forgoing most of the industry’s current trends, the song opts for a synth-soaked dance beat that’s a bit retro but mostly just refined and stylish. Refreshingly, Velvet Trigger is sung all the way through, anchored by a deceptively catchy hook that spotlights the girls’ warm tones.

While the track will not win any awards for originality, its sleek dance energy is very welcome in K-pop. The production has a simple, timeless appeal, choosing sounds that will work just as well ten years from now as they do in the moment. The same can be said for the group’s unaffected performance. It’s straightforward in the best way and hints at great potential going forward. I don’t know how many people will hear this song given their agency’s limited reach, but I’m definitely rooting for their success.

  1. there was a lot controversy arrive the group because felt they were talented especially kelly. The show itself was awful. So I had very to low expectations, but it’s quite enjoyable. I like it for the most part but it would’ve been better in the hands of any other group. The vocal delivery is just decent, they kinda sound disinterested in singing the song while not having the prowess to really attack the melody. Still, I was expecting worse

  2. It’s actually not bad. It’s …. kind of cute. For the vocal, it sounds recorded on really crappy mics in a hurry, like three takes ok sounds good, in a studio rented by the hour. Or someone’s basement studio DIY set-up.

I have to pull out my Kpop Lyrics in English list for this one “Velvet trigger fire eyes”. What? she says blinking. Is this something the kids are saying these days because I haven’t heard this one. I’ve heard enough “siiixxx-seevvveen” to ban it in my general vicinity.

I’m going to rate it somewhere between “Cringey Cringetastic” and “A single lyric line so craptastic it is great” which is in the middle of the rankings.

    Here is the list again.

Kpop Lyrics in English ranking, in descending order, best to worst:

Intelligible English good lyrics that rhyme

    Intelligible English good lyrics

Unintelligible English of any quality lyrics

    Double entendres

    Mispronounced but decent lyrics

A single lyric line that is so craptastic it is great

    Cringey but campy lyrics

    Cringey cringetastic lyrics

    Crappy Craptastic lyrics

    Single entendres

    Oh so bland lyrics

Really, what does that mean lyrics

But, um, I don’t think you know what that means lyrics

A single word said over over like that will make it mean something lyric

    Well-pronounced lousy lyrics

  3. someone count how many times the word trigger was said please Idk I should be liking this but they sound sos bored “singing” this that ultimately makes me bored.

All that and I still havent gotten into how corny the lyrics are.

  4. The hook is kinda catchy I admit, but they repeat it way too many times throughout the song that it loses the pull near the end.

The melody & beat is kinda nice, but the song production could have added more variety to make it less boring for the second part. Around 7.5-7.75 for me.
