Song Review: RESCENE – Heart Drop

After an exciting flash of energy with 2024’s Love Attack, girl group RESCENE retreated back to current girl group tropes for their work this year. Still, they’ve developed a small but passionate fan base and are set to expand those numbers with an upcoming album. Up first is pre-release Heart Drop.

Honestly, all of these songs are starting to blur into the same thing for me. I’m not sure what makes Heart Drop different from a Hearts2Hearts release, for example. The instrumental is muted all the way through, dulling the edges of its shuffling percussion as languid synths provide an atmospheric backdrop. The chorus is a mix of stylish talking and errant bits of melody. I don’t find anything particularly exciting or endearing about this sound and the fact that we’ve heard so much of it over the past few years makes me even less enthused.

Heart Drop is best summarized by its opening bars, which sound like the background of a fashion shoot happening in the room next door. The song’s sonic landscape keeps listeners at a distance, as if designed to be heard while doing something else. The music never tries to yank you by the collar and pull you into its world. Instead, it simply exists around you, aloof and fleeting.

  1. Disappointed, the girls can definitely handle more ambitious material. Would’ve been whatever as a b side, didn’t need to be a pre release

  2. I usually check out K-pop stuff in the morning before work but man… I clicked out of this so fast because of how… boring it was. I really thought it was a title and was gonna be so disappointed they sold out to the trendy NewJeans-esque sound. What happened to THE bombastic Rescene songs?? At least this is a pre-release… but I’ve heard them with better promoted b-sides, like Yo Yo, Pinball, Crash. Those are genius songs with an amazing chorus and capture/introduce the essence of Rescene. This probably sounds fine overall for the mini album but it’s so meh.
