Song Review: Say My Name – UFO (ATTENT!ON)

It feels like it’s been ages since I last wrote a proper song review. In reality, it’s only been a week, but when you’re used to doing this every single day a week can feel like a year. Soon it’ll be January and the K-pop industry will whir back to life, but before that we’ve got an oddly timed comeback from girl group Say My Name.

None of Say My Name’s past material has clicked with me, but I’m always open to a new song changing the trajectory of a group’s sound. UFO (ATTENT!ON) does feel like a reset, adding rock edge to the group’s oeuvre. The typical skittering percussion of this era is bolstered by plenty of guitar, adding a power pop energy to UFO. Add a healthy dose of cheerleader chants and you’ve got an interesting blend of both past and present trends.

In another world, this is the recipe for an excellent, singalong track. However, UFO doesn’t quite get off the ground. The problem here (which isn’t shocking) are the melodies. In particular, the chorus lacks the memorable hook needed to anchor the entire track. I appreciate its punchy spirit and two-part refrain, but the vocal lines are too flat to spawn much interest. The singing gets louder, but louder doesn’t always mean more exciting.

  1. K-pop has this annoying way of releasing songs after their relevance – songs about monsters after Halloween, a recent song about baseball after the baseball season ended (or long before the World Baseball Classic begins) – and now a song about UFOs after 3I/ATLAS has moved on, and even Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb now concedes it wasn’t alien technology. I just find that really curious, why songs like this aren’t scheduled for release in timely fashions to capitalize on some kind of added relevance.

  2. It’s so sad being GG stan those years…

    I don’t want girl crush, but I also don’t want beigepop…

I want something bright, with bombastic melodies… I want SNSD, f(x), Red Velvet, Lovelyz, GFriend and WJSN….
