Song Review: Tarzzan (ALLDAY PROJECT) – Medusa

Though their music has been very uneven so far, I find ALLDAY PROJECT a pretty exciting addition to the current K-pop landscape. Certain members court controversy, which only adds to their appeal for some fans. For my part, I’m just happy to see another co-ed group becoming successful in K-pop. I wish we had more of them with varying styles and sounds.

Apart from the nursery-rhyme-esque title track Look At Me, the group’s first mini album is strong. The unit tracks are particularly fun. But for some reason, they’ve decided to promote the project’s undisputed nadir with a music video. That reason, I suspect, is that Medusa‘s protagonist is Tarzzan. Love him or hate him, everyone’s talking about him. His rap style is not for me, and Medusa is like aural repellent to these ears. There are very few types of music I outwardly dislike, but this slurred style of hip-hop is not something I would ever choose to listen to.

Because of this, I don’t know that I’m qualified to discern what makes an individual song “good” or “bad” within this sub-genre, but I do know that lyrics like “Never followed trends, trendsеtting my trend” make my eyes glaze over and come across as a kid playing hip-hop dress-up. They could easily be ignored if given an exciting beat that makes your head nod in spite of itself, but Medusa‘s lurching rumble simply feels claustrophobic and depressing to me.

  1. The irony of having Korean flags in your MV and claiming to be original while you go around cosplaying black people 😭 and given the events of this and that One More Time rap, may he get permanently banned from the recording studio (๑˃̵ᴗ˂̵)💕 (yes, the kaomoji’s intentional)

Rating’s the same (the synths in the beginning was lowkey cool though, wish it was utilized in a better song)

  2. Song is not for me. Pass.

Adding, this is how I heard the lyrics go, roughly:

    Seeing me deuce

    I’m doing the freezer

    put stamp on my visa

    I travel like wheezer

    My ice make like bleezer

    • tbf I don’t think adp is a vocally focused group and instead rap/sing talking, so it’s understandable why most of the members aren’t vocally great. I still agree tho

  4. Please don’t let this culture vulture, wannabe back in. If you’re gonna try to imitate and profit off of someone’s culture you could at least have the skill, creativity, charisma and talent to back it up. However has none of these things and is powered by audacity and his sagging pants alone.

  5. The song is not for me, also he can’t rap. The only thing I could find good about the track was the MV.

On another note, I do not like the amount of hate this guy receives, I mean braids and non-whitewashed skin, is that the problem. Also, so many idols act like wannabe rappers and imitate their black counterparts. It’s nothing unheard of in K-pop. As far as I understand, he deserves more criticism for his non-existent rap skills than the “cultural appropriation” cases.

    • The dude has been caught on camera inserting the n-word into a lyric (from another song) that didn’t even have it in the first place (while he was in a car). General antics wise he’s about on level with Cortis and THEN he does the YG special of just… saying the word.

  6. I was so uncomfortable watching this. Peak cringe. Does no one at his company or him understand the irony in this release? He’ll be praised by the uninitiated and the racists and collect his check.

the production was cool though reminded me of nada
