Song Review: MADEIN – PUNG!

MADEIN’s recent comeback repainted them as rockers. The song didn’t enjoy much longevity on my own playlist, but I appreciated their embrace of a different sound in K-pop’s current girl group landscape. Now, they’ve released a music video for follow-up track PUNG, which is far more reserved in both sound and execution.

I’m actually kind of surprised their agency put the money forward for this video, as PUNG feels like classic filler b-side material to me. It’s a pleasant midtempo, bopping along an easy groove and highlighted by breezy melodies that don’t demand much of the listener or performer. It’s the kind of song I could see soundtracking a study session or a leisurely stroll through the neighborhood. It’s not compelling enough to steal attention from anything else going on, but its amiable sound will have your head nodding whether you realize it or not. They even squeeze in a slight key change toward the end, though as with every other element you might not notice it because it all passes by without much fanfare.

  1. The song is like the snacks and beverage cart on an airplane: Its fine, given the circumstances, but not a reason to hop aboard.

I am not giving their people an extra point for a key change this time around. Rating is about right.
