Super Junior remains one of the most active groups of their stature, routinely releasing new music as a collective and as soloists. Today, Donghae is back with a new album of his own, collaborating with Jay Park and 1iL for its title track Good Day. As its title suggests, this is an upbeat, sunny stomper but comes across as way too on the nose for me.
I love happy songs, but I tend to wince when songs tell me to be happy. Music like this often comes across as a commercial jingle or the soundtrack to a daytime talk show host walking out to their seat. It’s toothless and a little annoying and not something I’d choose to listen to on its own. Such is the case with Good Day, which has good intentions but ultimately winds up in my trash bin. The star-studded features offer a nice way to break up the track and add new textures / a bit of edge, but the exclamatory “good day! good day!” hook is doing nothing for me. Donghae is as amiable a presence as always and I do believe the authenticity of Good Day even if I have no use for it. I sincerely hope it brightens up someone’s morning.

It’s a good day for a good day! … which was a different SuJu song.
It sounds like it could have been a SuJu b-side in any other year but wound up being a Donghae solo as he wrote most of the song. Its not punchy or camp enough for SuJu main, unless someone punched up the arrangement to add more brass. Not complaining, just saying.
With my ELF bias factored in, I’d give in high 7’s.
The other Good Day is a better song.
