Song Review: Young Posse – We Don’t Go To Bed Tonight

After exploring various sub-genres of hip-hop (my favorite being 90s G-funk), Young Posse have turned their attention toward a sound closer to hyperpop. This resulted in the utterly awful Visa earlier this year, but they’ve managed some refinement since then. New single We Don’t Go To Bed Tonight is much more palatable.

There’s a great song buried in here somewhere. I love the intensity of the beat and the hook is fun. I’m a big fan of hip-hop placed over electro production and We Don’t Go To Bed Tonight scratches that itch. However, I wish there was a version of the track without the incessant vocal effects. I know that’s a tenet of this genre, but for me it robs the music of so much punch. Young Posse become yet another component of the production rather than compelling ringleaders of this aural circus. This song would sound so awesome anchored by a clear, powerful vocal.

Of course, you’re not supposed to write a review about what you wish a song was, so we must contend with what we have in front of us. Even given my criticisms, We Don’t Go To Bed Tonight is pretty fun. It continues K-pop’s hesitant tiptoe back into second-gen sounds, when autotune was also a big factor in the music. This track misses out on the drama and sheer silliness it should have, but we’re taking steps in the right direction and for that I’m thankful.

  1. Ooh, I love this one! It’s way, way better than Visa, but yeah, wish the hooks were stronger, something like Ate That.

    8 (7, 9, 7, 9) for me.

  2. After the chorus single chant “Dance” I instantly went woo-oo a la Taeyang.

I think its pretty good and pretty generic. Like the sound coming from the Uniqlo or Zara on a high street. I feel like I would hear this over the air at a hip place and think (as the old one) I have no idea who this is, and one of the kids would be like “mom.”. And life would continue on to the next song.
